Position Overview:

The learning product specialist leads the design and development of an open-source, wiki-based, digital learning platform for essential medical and surgical skills. This role is responsible for managing the efforts of external partners such as web developers, content providers, medical experts, and educational experts. The learning product specialist will create standards for learning content, develop comprehensive user guides, and coordinate with external partners to continually improve the platform. The learning platform specialist role is funded by the Intuitive Foundation and is part of the Global Surgical Training Challenge. This role is a one year position with potential for renewal depending on funding. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall design and development of a digital learning platform which will host skills-based and knowledge-based learning content focused on essential medical and surgical skills.

  • Design, manage, and refine processes for continual testing and improvement of the digital learning platform.

  • Determine appropriate involvement of key stakeholders such as: grantees, mentors, partners, judges, experts, and others.

  • Provide technical support to platform users such as troubleshooting, creating and accessing user accounts, creating standards for content permissions, developing “how to” content and documentation, and updating frequently asked questions.

  • Manage user-created content on “knowledge pages” that will supplement training modules created content providers.

  • Collaborate with potential partners to adapt existing learning resources and knowledge pages for the digital learning platform.

  • Create branding assets, guidelines, and style guides to ensure consistent and appropriate branding on the platform.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direction and oversight of the external web development team, including the management of an ongoing “punch list” of desired changes to the platform.

  • Liaise with grantees from the Global Surgical Training Challenge to accommodate and adapt their skills-based surgical training modules on the platform. 

  • Liaise with students from a related EMT training class to accommodate their skills- and knowledge-based training modules on the platform. 

  • Coordinate with Global Surgical Training Challenge partners–MIT Solve, Nesta Challenges, Intuitive Foundation, and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland–to prompt and capture user feedback to inform additional modifications to the platform.

  • Provide technical support to platform users such as troubleshooting, creating and accessing user accounts, managing private/public content permissions, developing “how to” content and documentation, and updating frequently asked questions.

  • Collaborate with potential partners to adapt existing learning resources and knowledge pages for the platform.

  • Create branding assets, guidelines, and style guides to ensure consistent and appropriate branding on the platform.

  • Integrate the “toolboxes” of knowledge and best practices for surgical training teams onto the platform.

  • Assist with Solve’s Strategic & Partner Programs work on an ad hoc basis

  • Other duties as needed or required .

Supervision Received:

This position reports to the Lead for the Global Surgical Training Challenge, and will also work closely with Dr. Catherine Mohr, President of the Intuitive Foundation. This position requires working knowledge of online learning, education technology, learning best practices, and web development. A successful candidate will have existing knowledge and experience developing content for learning management systems. 

Supervision Exercised:

This position will supervise the work of external contractors including web developers at Appropedia. This position will not directly supervise other staff members at MIT Solve.

Qualifications & Skills: 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

This position requires a minimum of three years experience developing online learning content, modules, and products. This position requires an individual with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. 

A successful individual in this role will have:

  • a working understanding of best practices and standard procedures for developing and managing online learning systems.

  • experience managing and communicating with web developers and technical experts.

  • the ability to construct systems and procedures for ensuring the quality and usability of the platform and related content.

  • knowledge of terminology in both web development, online learning, and training.

  • ability to handle confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment. 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Five years experience building online learning systems for learners in low- to middle-income countries. A successful individual in this role will have a combination of undergraduate and graduate education in education technology, health care, and/or online learning. 

An ideal candidate for this role would have substantial experience developing a similar wiki-based online learning system for training health care providers in resource constrained settings. Individuals with interdisciplinary knowledge of the health care professions are desired.
