Solution Overview

Solution Name:

Orígenes, Global & Inclusive Digital ID.

One-line solution summary:

Using short message service we shorten long distances to most vulnerable populations. Receiving personal data and returning legal digital ID

Pitch your solution.

Long distances to civil registration offices are one of the most common barriers. At Orígenes we are committed to solving this by providing a remote service to get an ID,shortening distances. The process is simple, starts when a person sends an SMS to Orígenes platform with personal data and geografic location. Received and stored in blockchain,a pair public/private key number as digital ID is issued, where public key is sent as answer. At this time a person has limited privileges like consulting in a health center. A state officer must confirm personal and biometric data, being responsible to define how to achieve this.To finish the process the person receives the private key and 12 words recovery list and local NID.This is achieved through the use of smart contracts, executed on the blockchain platform. We will issue a superlative change in people's life and it is scaled globally.

Film your elevator pitch.

What specific problem are you solving?

The problem we want to solve is the long distances to the civil registration office that does not allow a person to manage an identity.

World Bank statistics inform one Billion unregistered persons worldwide, in Latin America & Caribbean there are 33.8 Millions. In Many Caribbean countries, more than 50% are unregistered women. In Latin America countries like Paraguay and Bolivia have 20% of its population unregistered.

Long distance required to travel to access the nearest offices of civil registration issuing lack of workday and economic costs. In some regions, those women that travel with children represent a barrier, being both endangered and limiting the possibility to get an identity. Managing an ID by SMS will solve those situations.

People are not aware of the importance of having an ID, and the services that they don’t achieve, being invisible for the State (country). SMS costs must be paid by governments, allowing access to anyone spite of his or her economic situation to request an ID.

Orígenes is an inclusive digital identity platform, available to everyone.
Improve communications, brings traceability of events and online reports are provided.
Doubtless, the scale of the problem is global, our solution as well.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

The road may become full of obstacles for those who do not have a legal identity. Orígenes is here to change this, showing a disruptive way, offering a secure service to apply/receive a legal ID.  The target population are those who live far from a civil registration office and vulnerable people.

The impact in their life will be superlative. People will be able to access those services and social coverage that are not accessible without an ID, avoiding time spent travelling to register offices.

We are convinced that Geographical proximity and the similarity of our cultures will enable a very good  implementation of the functional case, a successful  proof of concept in Paraguay, Canindeyú city.

We have been researching troubles that people face a day due to lack of identity and several types of violence that they are exposed to. Especially women that sometimes don't have money or “the permission”. Many of them even don't realize the importance of getting an ID.

Orígenes provide a person an immediate solution to access basic services like health or education. By bringing the office closer to the community we help build social justice and reduce inequalities, changing people's lives in a short time.

Which dimension of the Challenge does your solution most closely address?

  • How can countries ensure that everyone—especially vulnerable and marginalized groups—are able to apply/register for an ID in a way that protects people’s health, data, and the integrity of the ID system?

Explain how the problem, your solution, and your solution’s target population relate to the Mission Billion Challenge Global Prize and your selected dimension.

The solution lines up with the target of this challenge because its focus is to provide a service to a portion of the population that has been historically left behind, being most affected girls and women and has no access to the bureaucratic services for different reasons, such as the geographic dispersion, and so on.

Orígenes use public blockchain, a decentralized, immutable data store and secure technology, joined with Short Message service to grant a feasible solution and mobile access through coverage area for the final user, without almost any exception. The system is replicable, allowing it to scale globally.

More About Your Solution

Which of the following categories best describes your solution?

  • A new application of an existing technology

Describe what makes your solution innovative.

Orígenes, is a descentralized, inclusive Identity platform that joins Short Messages Service technoloy and Blockchain. We develop an automatic process that brings a unique ID, shorting distances and improving time.

Orígenes will issue a superlative change in people's life and it is scaled globally.

Let's EXchange one SMS by one ID at a time, reducing inequalities and bringing the state closer to the community.

Provide evidence that your solution works.

Orígenes platform is develop using the following technologies and software:

Short message service layer is implemented by use of PlaysmsKannel, Open Source WAP and SMS gateway.

Security will be protected at all times through access control management using multi factor authentication: including user/password (private/public key), twelve word´s recovery list.

Public blockchain use is crucial for decentralizing control over critical information as well as ensuring all the parties that their information and access rules are clear and immutable so they don’t change over time. All our information will be recorded and signed on blockchain through smart contracts and key management allowing access only to who has to manage it.

Smart contract, public/private key are develop in a public Blockchain, Aeternity.

An authenticated user, who validates ownership or permission to access controlled by smart contract, is allowed to look for  personal data in the platform. The result will be a successful recovery of personal data, not only readable but also understandable.

Confirmation of correct implementation of multi-factor access data method. Validation of access denial for unauthorized users. The personal data is impossible to modify once they are persisted in the blockchain, this way the immutability of information is warrantied.

Main components are an accessible web platform and mobile applications for operators  working on the field as well as a blockchain tier that implements smart contracts.

Please select the technologies currently used in your solution:

What is your theory of change?

We suggest a solution that allow change the fact that office are allocated in cities or big towns, far to villages or vulnerale groups of people.

Through Orígenes platform we will issue a bridge between those two reallities.

Bringing state closer to the communities, at lowest cost.

We believe that it will have a superlative impact thanks to technologies used.

How can your solution be incorporated into identification systems?

Public blockchain use is crucial for decentralizing control over critical information as well as ensuring all the parties that their information and access rules are clear and immutable so they don’t change over time. All our information will be recorded and signed on blockchain through smart contracts and key management allowing access only to who has to manage it.

Orígenes offers a gateway between state government platform and the end user.

Public/private key is issued as digital ID, and the system allow temporal identification number.

Describe how 'user friendly' your solution is to incorporate into a digital identification system.

API use by Orígenes are open source and well documented, granting interoperability between Systems.

Explain how your solution is interoperable with existing technologies and open standards.

We use open source technologies: Aeternity , Kannel and playSMS.

All API are public available.

How does your solution account for low connectivity environments and for users with low literacy and numeracy levels?

Short Message Service do not need Internet services. So, the coverage area that the technology use is almost everywhere. Check 2G networks at gsma coverage maps

The solution is simple to use, do not need expert knowledge. Just know how to send an SMS and personal data like name, age, location.

Public blockchain is a descentralized solution worldwide and do not exchange information directly with end user.

Partnership & Prize Funding Opportunities

Why are you applying to the Mission Billion Challenge Global Prize?

Participating in this initiative is a great opportunity to contribute from our experience in solutions to identity problems. We consider that allowing people to have an identity is key so that they can assert their rights. This right begins at the time of birth registration, providing an official identity, recognizing your name, nationality and lineage. Vulnerable populations must be help to improve and be recognized by states, aquiring their right as civil populations.

In case of coinciding with projects that have the same objective or interest, we are open to generating synergies.

Orígenes is actually a prototype. Anyway we do believe in the importance to join with organizations that are already working on social impact.
