Positive Messages and Actions

Provide a one-line summary of your solution.

Low cost technological and other quality solutions to improve people's emotional and mental health.

What specific problem are you solving?

The following numbers by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) show the mental health conditions of people in the United States and around the world:

  • 21% of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2020 (52.9 million people). This represents 1 in 5 adults.
  • 5.6% of U.S. adults experienced serious mental illness in 2020 (14.2 million people). This represents 1 in 20 adults.
  • 16.5% of U.S. youth aged 6-17 experienced a mental health disorder in 2016 (7.7 million people).
  • 6.7% of U.S. adults experienced a co-occurring substance use disorder and mental illness in 2020 (17 million people).
  • Annual prevalence among U.S. adults, by condition:
    • Major Depressive Episode: 8.4% (21 million people)
    • Schizophrenia: <1% (estimated 1.5 million people)
    • Bipolar Disorder: 2.8% (estimated 7 million people)
    • Anxiety Disorders: 19.1% (estimated 48 million people)
    • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: 3.6% (estimated 9 million people)
    • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: 1.2% (estimated 3 million people)
    • Borderline Personality Disorder: 1.4% (estimated 3.5 million

People around the world experienced mental health problems as well. The World Health Organization, Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, and Global Health Data Exchange state that in 2020, “Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. Over 700,000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.”

In The 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Demonte Chapman, which sold more than 10 million copies, Dr. Chapman mentions the different ways that people express and receive love, such as words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, quality time, and physical touch. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 government-mandated isolation from other people measures and nonessential business shutdowns, people were not able to satisfy their basic needs. People were not able to earn a living, provide for their needs, meet in person with loved ones, visit doctors in person, or even hug the people they love. These circumstances and many others contribute to the mental health crises today in the United States and around the world.

According to Greeting Card Association, “Americans purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards each year. Annual retail sales of greeting cards are estimated between $7 and $8 billion.”

For these reasons, T W Y INC. strives to discover low-cost technological
and other quality solutions to improve people's mental health in the United States and eventually around the world.

What is your solution?

T W Y Inc. plans to improve people's lives through the following objectives:

  • To reduce unemployment, poverty, hunger, and mental health problems by creating job opportunities for the most vulnerable populations, such as people of color, women, middle-aged people, elderly people, people with disabilities, and any other minority/new majority groups in the SF Bay Area.
  • To collect data on people’s physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, psychological needs in order to improve their lives.
  • To refer people to the resources they need, such as counseling and therapy, food pantries, elder care, welfare agencies, and other organizations.
  • To produce calendars, framed prints, posters, gift books, stationary, journals, magnets, plaques, and other novelty items with social expressions in order to boost people’s morale.
  • To meet the needs of those who seek words of affirmation and to create products with positive motivational messages. The people who choose “words of affirmation” as their primary love language need kind genuine heartfelt words to feel loved, valued, accepted, appreciated, and validated. These people need words of affirmation to feel good about themselves, whereas insults tear them down. Compliments boost their self-worth, whereas criticism damages their spirit. Because Debbie Sho understands the impact of words, she writes positive messages to inspire others. Her words of encouragement have already reached many people.  Her writings would appeal to people who purchase greeting cards. According to Greeting Card Association, “Americans purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards each year. Annual retail sales of greeting cards are estimated between $7 and $8 billion.”
  • To mobilize various entities like volunteers, individuals, and nonprofit and for-profit organizations to collaborate on charitable causes.
  • To utilize technology like phone calls, text messaging, online chats, emails, videoconferencing, teleconferencing, social media, online publishing, word processing, and other technological advancements to improve people’s lives.
  • To help underprivileged families and individuals through the collection of extra food, goods, clothes, and other excess items from civilians, nonprofits, and businesses to prevent surplus items from going to landfills.
  • To participate in The Food Recovery Challenge, Zero Waste California, and other waste reduction programs.
  • To clean up, beautify, and renovate private and public places, such as homes, businesses, beaches, parks, schools, etc.
  • To pursue partnerships from multiple entities, such as individuals, families, foundations, businesses, and the Solve Grant in order to improve the world in which we live.
