Basic Information

Our tagline:

AI-enabled jobs marketplace where candidates can start working on the first day

Our pitch:

Just in Mexico, 8 million people are underemployed and 2 million are unemployed. Every year, 1 million students drop out of university because they cannot afford tuition and 9 million single moms struggle to find flexible jobs. Traditional employment options with a 6 day work week earning minimum wage, are incompatible with student or parent lives resulting in 30 million Mexicans having no alternative but the informal economy.

The lack of agile recruiting solutions also hurts businesses. On top of struggling to adapt fixed capacity to variable demand, companies battle 15% monthly staff turnover and 7% absenteeism in blue collar positions, resulting in 1 billion missed work days per year in Mexico and 5 billion across Latin America.

As opposed to traditional recruiting, which takes 52 days on average to fill a position, Apli fills vacancies in 24 hours. We do this with machine learning models that match workers with jobs based on data from thousands of assignments completed through Apli's platform. To fill jobs in record time, Apli uses chatbots with natural language processing to invite, schedule and coordinate candidates. Our technology can scale to connect millions of people looking for flexible income sources with tens of thousands of businesses.

About Your Solution

What makes our solution innovative:

Apli replaces traditional recruiting, which takes 52 days of average to fill a position and heavily relies on subjective opinions. Even traditional staffing agencies need at least 1 week to provide a list of candidates that the company still needs to interview and hire, resulting in 2 weeks of lost productivity.

In contrast, Apli is the only end-to-end solution that offers same-day hiring of pre-screened, qualified workers. Apli offers businesses maximum flexibility allowing them to contract candidates for projects as short as 1 day, or to try out candidates on a temporary basis before extending them a permanent contract.

How technology is integral to our solution:

Apli's entire business model depends on leveraging data and technology to match opportunities to the best candidates in record time.

Automating candidate profiling and matching through machine learning models and chatbots enables Apli to fill vacancies in 24 hours and turn missed days of work into flexible job opportunities. For example, Apli was able to profile 7,000 candidates in just 1 week with 1 full-time employee and our operations team coordinated 5x more shifts / person that 1 year ago. Apli's technology allows its marketplace to scale efficiently and increase its impact.

Our solution goals over the next 12 months:

Our top 3 goals are:

Affiliate more corporate clients which can request higher volumes of on-demand candidates than Apli's current client base which is mostly composed of SMEs. Corporate clients not only increase volumes and liquidity, but have well known brands which help with candidate engagement and provide Apli with opportunities for national and international expansion.

Increase company retention through a better app for requesting and tracking services and streamlining customer service.

Improve our machine learning models and profiling chatbots to optimize assignment reviews, which results in higher company and candidate retention.

Our vision over the next three to five years to grow and scale our solution to affect the lives of more people:

In 5 years from now, Apli's conversational interfaces will be able to profile and support workers at scale, going beyond instant messaging platforms into voice and video, forming a more nuanced understanding of each candidate. Apli's machine learning models, fed by millions of work assignments and hundreds of thousands of workers, will be more precise at matching people to opportunities than any traditional recruiting method. With the largest dataset of profiled candidates and their work reviews, Apli will build Latin America's most accurate model for predicting on-the-job performance.

The regions where we will be operating in the next 12 months:

  • Latin America and the Caribbean

How we will reach and retain our customers or beneficiaries:

Apli uses automation to match underemployed workers with unfilled shifts at businesses in the hospitality, retail, logistics and experiential marketing industries. By automating the traditional recruiting process, Apli makes it possible to recruit unemployed and underemployed workers in real time to fill urgent, short-term assignments which would have remained unworked otherwise.

Apli also helps students and single moms, for whom traditional employment options, a 6 day work week earning minimum wage of USD 5 / day, are not an option. This results in 30 million Mexicans (57% of the occupied population) having few alternatives outside of the informal economy.

How many people we are currently serving with our solution:

Since launch, Apli has completed 18,000 assignments in 600 companies in the retail, restaurant, call center, and logistics industries. Its business model is sustainable as company repurchase rates and candidate rework rates result in a breakeven of fully loaded marketing and sales acquisition costs in less than 13 months. On average, Apli candidates earn USD 20 per day or 5x the minimum wage because companies are willing to pay more for variable labor when they truly need it. Every month, 7-12% of active companies make a full time offer to an Apli candidate.
About Your Team

How our solution team is organized:

For-Profit

The skills our solution team has that will enable us to attract the different resources needed to succeed and make an impact:

Apli was founded by co-CEOs Vera Makarov and Jose Maria Pertusa Honrubia. Since meeting in Harvard Business School, they launched 3 Latin American internet companies ‚online classifieds sites Lamudi and Carmudi, and Apli. Prior to Apli, Jose was the CMO of Linio, Latin America's largest online store and Growth Manager for Facebook LatAm. They were joined by cofounders CTO Volker Mueller and CSO Yeri Arenas. Volker has previous experience as a CTO of e-commerce platform Kentriki and various US-based investment funds. Yeri has a background in hospitality and was the CSO of Hellofood Mexico.

Our revenue model:

Apli's business model is a marketplace, where Apli charges companies a commission on temporary assignments (60% of revenues) and headhunting fees on permanently placed workers (40% of revenues). As Apli grows, its marketplace becomes more efficient through more precise candidate matching and pricing to balance supply and demand. Apli can scale with minimum fixed costs (investing in more servers) as its growth depends on fully variable costs of sales and marketing to acquire more companies and workers with economies of scale from positive network effects.
Partnership Potential

Why we are applying to Solve:

With Solve's support, we would grow our in-house technology team. We aim to add 1 junior developer and with USD 250,000 we could double the team to 16, accelerating the development of:

Customized Apli's technology to serve large corporate clients
Improvements in candidate profiling, with deeper skills and psychometric tests
Voice-based conversational interfaces
Native mobile client apps to eliminate friction for companies requesting workers

Solve would also provide a priceless validation of Apli's vision of the future of work, which would help us bring large corporate clients on board and help Apli's expansion.

The key barriers for our solution:

Apli competes against classified sites and social networks that are using their own algorithms to match candidates to job opportunities. However, as they are not an end-to-end solution, they don't know whether the candidates showed up, were hired, or received good performance reviews to feed back into their algorithms. By being an end-to-end solution, Apli has an operationally complex business model that requires the coordination of thousands of simultaneous, on-demand assignments. Since this is not humanly possible, Apli relies on machine learning models and chatbots to assign candidates to job opportunities and coordinate their attendance.
