Dr Jemimah Muthoni Kariuki

Founder, Wheels for life

Kenya

Dr. Jemimah Kariuki is a young, innovative and compassionate doctor who is deeply passionate about preventive medicine especially in maternal and child health. As such, she has founded many clubs in her journey including Peace club after post-election violence, Public Health club that is currently instrumental in running cervical cancer prevention drives as well as leading research on NCD’s in college and Akinah society that promotes adolescent sexual health teaching in the slum of Mathare.
Her love for maternal health care led her to her specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology and she is currently a first year Post graduate student in the field. It is while serving in this capacity in the wards that she noticed a sharp decline in maternal admissions with a rise in complications during the Covid 19 pandemic especially after the Curfew was implemented. Eager to find the cause, she noticed a delay in accessing health care due to limited transport options at the time and sought to find a solution. She came up with the innovative solution to link women to licensed vehicles from their homes to the hospitals while counseling the mothers, a concept that birthed the wheels for life programme.
