L. Rafael Reif

President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Since July 2012, L. Rafael Reif has served as the 17th President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he leads an aggressive agenda to advance discovery science, stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, re-shape higher education and focus the talents of the MIT community on making a better world. In education, his central focus is the development of the Institute’s latest experiments in online learning, MITx and edX. To enhance MIT’s innovation ecosystem and equip the next generation of innovators to drive their ideas to impact, he launched the MIT Innovation Initiative. Milestones include the creation of the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program. A member of the MIT faculty since 1980, he has served as provost, as director of MIT’s Microsystems Technology Laboratories, as associate department head for Electrical Engineering, and as head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the inventor or co-inventor on 13 patents.
