Martin Karanja

Director, GSMA Innovation Fund

Martin is a start-ups and impact enthusiast. Currently, he is a Director for the GSMA Innovation Fund, an entity within Mobile for Development at the GSMA that supports innovative digital solutions with positive socio-economic impact in low- and middle-income countries. Previously, Martin was a Market Engagement Director for the Ecosystem Accelerator programme, a programme that supports mobile operators and innovators in driving scale in unique, commercially, and socially sustainable mobile for development products and services in emerging markets. The programme has a portfolio of 34 start-ups funded to a tune of £6.5M and has helped the portfolio scale and attract additional funding of over £340M from commercial investors. Martin joined the GSMA in 2016 as a Senior Market Engagement Manager prior to which he was working at Hewlett Packard Enterprises as the Distribution Business Manager for East, West, and Southern Africa. He’s also worked at Symantec Corporation as Regional Business Development Manager for East and Francophone Africa in addition to Bharti Airtel Africa as a Group Product Marketing Specialist for SMS, Data and Mobile content across 17 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Martin has also worked with Orange Kenya (now Telkom Kenya). He holds a B.Sc. In International Business Administration from United States International University and masters in an MBA in Global Business Management from the same university.
