Agriple
Food waste and Post-harvest loss is a serious problem in Nigeria and Africa - about 60% of all food produced on the continent is lost to post-harvest loss, enough food to feed 300 million hungry people. Food loss and waste translates also into economic losses for farmers and other stakeholders in the food value chain and into higher prices for consumers, both of which affect food security by making food less accessible for the poorest and most vulnerable groups, mostly women and children.
Agriple is a web application that allows farmers upload pictures and prices of their farm produce and sell to buyers in any part of the country regardless of their geographical locations. Our service is a farm to table service that brings down the barriers placed on the sale of farm produce by physical locations, expanding the farmers' market access significantly, and cutting post-harvest loss and food waste.
Food waste is a global problem, and affects about 40% of all food produced in the world annually. Food waste and Post-harvest loss is an even bigger problem in Nigeria and Africa - about 60% of all food produced on the continent is lost to post-harvest loss, enough food to feed 300 million hungry people in the continent. Food loss and waste translates also into economic losses for farmers and other stakeholders in the food value chain and into higher prices for consumers, both of which affect food security by making food less accessible for the poorest and more vulnerable groups, mostly women and children.
Reducing food waste has a tremendous positive impact on the environment. Rotting food produce methane, a greenhouse gas that is 32 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Methane gas damages our climate and contributes significantly to global warming. Also when food waste occurs, the resources that went into producing and transporting that food (e.g. land, water, fertilizers, pesticides, and fuel) are also wasted, and this continuous cycle perpetuates poverty.
Our web application at www.agriple.com enables farmers to upload pictures and prices of their farm produce onto the platform and have buyers visit the platform to make purchases. Once payment is made for a produce through the payment gateway on the website, the details of the purchase is forwarded to our logistics partner who handle pickup and delivery. The payment for the produce is now remitted to the farmer after a successful delivery. This ensures that the farmers' sales are not limited to physical markets around them, but their produce is made visible to buyers everywhere in the country.
We use a LAMP stack for our API backend. With Laravel as the PHP framework. For the frontend, we use VueJS as our Javascript framework. The entire web application sits on an Ubuntu server on AWS.

Our solution cuts food waste, making food that would have gone to waste available. Not only does this improve the farmers' income, it lowers food prices for thousands of people.

Listing websites like 'Jiji.ng' also have farm produce listed as available on their platforms, but cannot vouch for the genuineness of these listings, and as such regularly set up users to be defrauded. Agriple's farmers are duly registered, and do not get their money remitted to them till the listed produce is delivered exactly as listed.
There is also foodlocker.com.ng. But unlike most this competitor, we are infrastructure light, and this will enable us break even quickly. Our model takes food straight from the farm to the buyers, meaning we do not necessarily need storage.
Finally, we employ predictive analytics to determine demand and consumer behavior, enabling us plan adequately.
