What specific problem are you solving?
In underserved regions across Africa, access to electricity remains a major barrier to economic participation. Despite global advances, nearly 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa still live without reliable electricity — especially in off-grid rural communities. Without power, running a business, refrigerating goods, using digital tools, or even lighting a workspace becomes nearly impossible. At the same time, 1.4 billion adults globally lack access to formal banking services, leaving them excluded from the capital they need to start or grow a business. Refugees, women, and rural entrepreneurs are especially affected, facing high barriers due to lack of collateral, documentation, or credit history. Through our work in refugee settlements like Bidibidi (Uganda) and rural regions in Senegal, we’ve seen firsthand that the problem isn’t a lack of ideas — it’s a lack of resources and opportunity. People are ready to launch small businesses — tailoring, food services, digital work — but they lack the electricity to power tools and the funding to get started. By combining solar energy with social entrepreneurship training and community-based microloans, we address both energy and financial exclusion — unlocking economic potential where it’s needed most.
What is your solution?
Our solution combines solar-powered energy access with community-based microloans and social entrepreneurship training to unlock economic opportunity in off-grid communities. SOCHILI provides solar energy infrastructure to rural villages in Senegal — giving families electricity for the first time. This opens the door to new possibilities: powering tools, preserving food, launching services. But electricity alone doesn’t lead to economic transformation - and that’s where Bridging Gaps comes in. We offer our proven pay-it-forward microloan model, where each entrepreneur receives an interest-free loan to start a business — and then pays it forward to another local entrepreneur. This creates a ripple effect of opportunity. Our model is built on trust, ownership, and local leadership, ensuring sustainability long after external funding ends. Each loan is paired with a hands-on support system: social entrepreneurship training, business incubation, and long-term mentorship. Our programs are co-led with local partners and tailored to the unique needs of the community. We create the conditions for people to turn access to energy into lasting livelihoods — whether that’s a woman running a solar-powered tailoring shop or a young entrepreneur launching a digital service. It’s clean energy meets circular finance — with people and community at the heart.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We serve rural, refugee, and underserved entrepreneurs, especially women and youth, who are often excluded from traditional economic systems. In countries like Senegal, we work with rural households gaining electricity for the first time. SOCHILI pioneered a donation-based solar access model, ensuring the poorest, most remote families can access clean, reliable energy without upfront costs. Families then participate in Empowerment Workshops to explore income-generating ideas — from charging stations to tailoring shops — laying the groundwork for entrepreneurship opportunities. Energy alone isn’t enough. Many lack the financial capital or business knowledge to launch a business — and that’s where Bridging Gaps comes in. We have already supported over 700 social entrepreneurs, many of whom are now preparing to launch or have already started their businesses — and for some, it's the first time they’re generating their own income. Participants are selected through a community-led process that ensures equity and inclusion. Our model goes beyond funding — we offer practical training, interest-free microloans, and long-term mentorship. The result is both personal and systemic: income, independence, and dignity for individuals; services, jobs, and opportunity for communities. Each entrepreneur pays their loan forward, creating a ripple effect of resilience and shared progress.
