What specific problem are you solving?
Our solution targets the combined waste management problems of organic waste disposal alongside animal feed production impacts which produce substantial global greenhouse gas emissions. Annually Southeast Asia produces more than 100 million tons of food waste which gets discarded into landfills at rates exceeding 70 percent. The municipal solid waste in Myanmar contains food waste in amounts over 60% which produces significant methane emissions while polluting water and endangering community health. Moreover, the global demand for animal protein is accelerating, pushing reliance on unsustainable feed ingredients like soy and fishmeal. These result in deforestation together with overfishing and produce more than 1 billion tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Smallholder farmers in Myanmar and across ASEAN face high feed costs and limited access to sustainable alternatives, reducing profitability and food security. Our solution uses Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming to convert food waste into high-protein animal feed and organic fertilizer. So, by using this BSF technology, we tackle food waste, reduce emissions, and offer affordable feed to underserved farming communities building circular, climate resilient local economies.
What is your solution?
Our solution transforms food waste into high-value products using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming technology. We utilize modular container units to foster the growth of Black Soldier Flies that transform market and farm waste and residential food scraps into valuable products. The larvae rapidly consume the waste, converting it into two valuable outputs; protein-rich insect meal for animal feed (ideal for poultry, aquaculture, and livestock) and nutrient-rich frass, which serves as an organic fertilizer for sustainable agriculture. Thus, our waste management process maintains self-contained operations which prevents food waste from going to landfills while cutting methane emissions while serving as an alternative to soy and fishmeal-based feeds. Moreover, our innovation integrates IoT sensors for environmental tracking which ensures proper conditions for developing larvae while improving operational performance. It’s designed for scalability, even in resource-constrained urban or peri-urban areas, with minimal land and water use. Additionally, we provide training and support to smallholder farmers and community groups, enabling them to operate their own BSF units and access affordable, eco-friendly agricultural inputs promoting climate resilience and income generation.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution directly serves smallholder farmers, aquaculture operators, urban waste collectors, and low-income communities in Myanmar where populations face high input costs for animal feed and fertilizers, limited access to sustainable farming solutions, and growing pressure from climate induced food insecurity and waste mismanagement. Smallholder farmers, who represent over 70% of agricultural producers in the region, often rely on costly imported feed products and chemical fertilizers that simultaneously destroy the environment as well as their financial capabilities. Meanwhile, organic waste especially from markets and households accumulates without efficient processing thus increases methane emissions and leads to public health risks and poor sanitation conditions. Our BSF solution offers a solution to these problems by lowering feed and fertilizer costs through local production of protein-rich insect meal and organic frass, improving crop yields and livestock health using natural, nutrient-dense inputs, creating green jobs in waste collection, BSF rearing, and input distribution, and promoting environmental stewardship through waste diversion and circular resource use. By empowering underserved communities with climate-smart, income-generating tools, we foster economic resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability where it’s needed most.
