What specific problem are you solving?
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death worldwide. There are over 356,000 cases annually in the U.S. alone, and close to 4 million cases each year globally. The survival rate for OHCA is dismally low, nearly 10%, as victims typically go without intervention until emergency medical responders arrive. Prompt medical attention, including early bystander CPR, can double or even triple survival rates. Despite this, fewer than 40% of people in the U.S. receive timely CPR before emergency services arrive, and the numbers are even lower in remote or resource-poor regions. The primary barrier to improving these outcomes is the limited accessibility to quality CPR training. Traditional CPR education often relies on expensive mannequins and simulators, in-person training sessions, and certified instructors, making it difficult for large populations, especially in underserved communities, to access life-saving education. In many low-income areas, training resources are scarce, and individuals are unaware of how to respond in such emergencies. The lack of affordable, scalable training methods exacerbates this issue, leading to a vast gap in critical lifesaving skills when they are needed most.
What is your solution?
Our solution is an AI-powered, mobile CPR training app that delivers real-time, personalized feedback on CPR performance without the need for specialized equipment. It leverages advanced video analysis and machine learning to help users learn and perfect their CPR skills anytime, anywhere, at a fraction of the cost of traditional training methods. The app uses your smartphone or tablet’s camera to capture CPR practice, analyzing key body movements such as hand placement, compression rate, depth, and posture. Using machine learning algorithms, the app compares the user’s technique to a database of correct CPR patterns and provides instant feedback on areas for improvement. This real-time guidance helps users adjust their technique, improving skill retention and performance. Powered by a supervised learning model trained on a large dataset of labeled CPR videos, the app can accurately identify correct and incorrect compressions. It offers a scalable, cost-effective alternative to traditional CPR training, making it ideal for remote or underserved areas with limited access to certified instructors. In summary, our mobile solution turns any smartphone or tablet into an interactive, accessible, CPR trainer, improving skill accuracy and retention with minimal cost and maximum flexibility.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves a broad range of individuals, from those in underserved communities with limited access to traditional CPR training, to urban populations who can benefit from enhanced awareness and practice. In underserved areas, where access to certified instructors, mannequins, and formal training programs is often limited, our mobile app provides an affordable, scalable, and easily accessible alternative, empowering people to learn life-saving skills at their convenience. This will directly improve survival rates in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases, particularly in regions where the mortality rate is high due to delays in receiving CPR. In urban settings, where CPR training is more readily available, our solution enhances skill retention and ensures that people maintain their ability to perform CPR effectively in an emergency. By offering real-time feedback, it provides an opportunity for individuals to refine their techniques and become more confident, potentially reducing the time it takes to react in life-or-death situations. Ultimately, our solution improves CPR proficiency, increases accessibility to training, and empowers people to act quickly and effectively in emergencies, making a meaningful impact on communities worldwide.
