Address of Stakeholders :
For Merchants : the Maali offers alterative channel for payment, traceability, accountability of funds
- Elevating opportunities for all people, especially those who are traditionally left behind
Maali is based on the principle of communicability of people and need to meet their desires; it is premised on a design that enables low cost global interchange of services within banks, creating a paradigm shift into ethical banking, while harnessing the energy, the ideas and the talents of financial and technology sector to deliver better value and achieve real change to the transformation of lives, for those individuals that are most disadvantaged.
It is an enable and opportunity finder, allowing thirty service providers in financial sector to use the channel to reachout to new market.
The project idea was conceptualised around 2010, after a several studies in agribusiness supply chains. I was involved in a lot of evaluations with commodity buyers and farmers, i realised the need for information (KYC) about the farmers , market information enable fair trade and financial services that could use the information as way of enabling traceble payment for the farmers and also reducing amount of bulk cash movements. This allowed us to start programs in profiling of farmers, developing platforms for the sharing of market information and also looking for alteratives to make payment and collect cash in the rural areas. A round 2016 the Infotrade Maalicard was founded as brand that was to enable payments of offtakers. We had a proof of concept implemented with support some private partners and worked with 1500 farmers ( cardholders) and 3 Merchants ( commodity off takers). The program was then supported by INTERSWITCH EA payment integrater, FSD Uganda that support INTERSWITCH and other development partners like VECO Uganda.
I am driven by the desire to create solutions, during my MBA studies in 1998 in UK at the University of Dundee i studied the behaviour of buyers of coffee and the importers. I realised that Africa as a continent had no advantage in the instruments that would help individuals in rural areas to safeguard their income or save the little that was paid from the sale of commodities. A lot of the cash was lost in transactions and lack of appropriate information about the market. I was then driven to come up with services and business ideas that promoted access to information , dissemination of trade information and collection of production . But this was no satisfising the need to support the poor farmers. I made a decision start investing my saving from the consultancies in design of ICT platforms that can enable inclusive services that i would monitor from one position as enteprises to support traders and farmers - thus the development INFOTRADE - connecting farmers and traders. Our dream is to cover Africa but with also opportunities to support remittance to and from africa.
We have already developed a platform locally that can enable banking for the rural people. The Maali Host is an application that manages client data and accounts in a banking environment to provide a full backend ledger operation for automated electronic payment transacting. It is the nerve centre where all transactions emanating from the various client facing terminals like ATMs and POS machines are referred to by the Host Switch, after authentification at the HSM, for authorisation of the transaction for availability of funds. The is is working and can enable both local and international payment.
We have a growing database of farmers of about 47,000 and Card population of 300 users and wallet subscribers now at 2350. We are pivot for the financial inclusive and the current COVID -1 Pandemic create yet other opportunity. This prompts for change of behavior and accelerates the adoption of new technologies. FIT with its “Maali” wishes to stimulate access and utilize the Mobile handsets ( Smartphones & Feature phones) .Maali as system is virtually enabled by the “Maalipot wallet” that is linked to an internationally registered pre-debit card (verve). It allows the user to receive, get deposits, transfer, save and make payment for goods and services as if it was cash. Also enable movement of cash to and from banks, mobile and over virtual wallet making it easy for the account holder to registered for third party services such Micro health, Personal Accident, Saving or obtain rescue loans and organize emergency e-food vouchers.
Developing technology systems or platforms is an areas that is not normally funded during the startup or idea phrase. The start of Maali was not easy, we start a service when the enabling environment and regulator framework was not available. I had to be involved in consultancy to support the set up better regulating environment . By doing this i lost time for the growth but i had to now get on understaking consultancy to build the capital i need to support the design and development of the system . Worked added hours to pay for a team to work with me.
I had to do self study in programming and systems to match up with the speed technology was changing.
Banks were not very willing to partner or give ecrow accounts , more so if had not back deposit over 60000 USD. I tried with several banks for over two years and unitl i was able to conceive one of the banks to partner with me with a projected share on income and business development.
I have lost personal cash and also investment with several partners, i have learn to select partners and build wining partners for my growth.
