MAKE IT LOUD Art Care Service Platform
There are currently around 3 million LGBT+ adults over age 50 in the United States of America. That number is expected to grow to around 7 million by 2030. Of the estimated 800,000 LGBTQ+ adults in New York State, nearly one-third (28%) are over the age of 50. LGBT+ older people face unique challenges as they age:
LGBTQ+ elders are 2 times more likely to be single and live alone.
LGBTQ+ elders are 4 times less likely to have children.
They are more likely to suffer from poorer physical and mental health due to loneliness, separation, isolation, and inability to express their identity and emotions.
34% of LGBTQ+ older people worry about having to hide their identity in order to access senior housing while 59% of LGBTQ+ older people report feeling a lack of companionship and 53% report feeling isolated from others
Fear of discrimination can lead LGBTQ+ older people to delay seeking needed care and can lead to premature institutionalization in nursing homes and long-term care facilities due to fear of hostile in-home care providers. LGBTQ+ older people also experience significant health disparities that include reduced access to health care, mental health concerns, and chronic physical conditions.
We want to change this.
We want to improve the life quality and satisfaction of LGBTQ+ seniors above 50 living in the New York Metropolitan area.
They need to be seen, heard, understood, and appreciated.
They need to connect with society as well as with themselves.
MAKE IT LOUD is a not-for-profit organization that targets improving care quality and well-being for LGBTQ+ seniors as well as enhancing work satisfaction and mutual understanding of their caregivers.
We are a third-party platform that provides the following resources for caregivers and receivers:
A safe and non-discriminatory mindset
Workshop guidelines and manuals
Art supplies & technological devices
Online gallery and contact channels
Both caregivers and receivers can choose to participate in the following programs:
Art
Music
Creative collage
Pottery
Through art creation, the elders are able to document their internal thoughts and feelings that are usually hidden or ignored. They can also increase their self-perception and self-image through artistic expression. The storytelling activities enhance personal value, cultivate community interaction, and eventually promote social awareness.
The artwork done by the elders will be displayed in our online gallery; the web platform will provide contact information for people to connect with elders as well as involvement options for the public to participate in or donate to the initiative.
We want to serve
The care receivers - the LGBTQ+ seniors, who are prone to low care service quality, discrimination, and loneliness
The caregivers, who are prone to emotional burnout, low satisfaction, and psychological discrimination
Through these artistic mediums, we want the LGBTQ+ seniors to be able to
Create a concretized, creative artwork based on their life stories to tell the society
Establish a more positive, internalized psychological narrative within themselves
Through these artistic processes, we want the caregivers to be able to
Better understand care receivers’ identity and background
Better engage in the caregiving process and improve work satisfaction
Thus, our goals are to
Help LGBTQ+ seniors to externalize and express their inner journey through artwork creation
Help LGBTQ+ seniors to internalize positive and constructive self-image and self-compassionate identity
Improve LGBTQ+ seniors’ mental health and subsequently, their physical well-being
Enhance the community engagement through hands-on interaction between LGBTQ+ seniors groups and the caregivers
Raise social awareness for the usually marginalized LGBTQ+ seniors group
Encourage more social participation and responsibility for the LGBTQ+ aging group
- Care is always our passion & motivation.
Our team members all come from the Strategic Design & Management program at Parsons School of Design, which puts human-centered experience & values first in today’s complicated business and social environment.
Our community on campus and in New York City also actively and enthusiastically engages in gender equality initiatives and LGBTQ+ awareness movements.
We are planning to reach out and get in touch with LGBTQ+ seniors in New York City. We’d like to interview and participate in their daily life to experience what they see, hear, and feel on a daily basis with permission.
