What specific problem are you solving?
Open field agriculture sustains millions globally and remains the world’s primary food source. However, the current system faces several significant challenges:
Soil degradation and erosion: Around 40% of soils worldwide are moderately to severely degraded, with the potential to reach 90% if deforestation and harmful practices continue.
Chemical overuse: Excessive fertilizers and pesticides harm biodiversity and pose health risks.
Climate-related losses: Erratic weather events linked to climate change result in agricultural losses of approximately $100 billion annually.
Regenerative agriculture offers a solution, promoting soil health and reducing environmental impacts. However, its scalability faces hurdles:
1. Climate vulnerability: Since it depends on open fields, it remains exposed to climatic risks.
2. Transition challenges: Farmers struggle with limited access to quality inputs due to weaker supply chains compared to conventional methods.
3. Knowledge gaps: A lack of reliable information hinders successful adoption of regenerative practices.
4. Economic viability: Regenerative success often relies on consumer premiums. Without these, farmers are reluctant to switch, as early yields may decline.
Addressing these barriers is key to making regenerative agriculture accessible and scalable for global impact.
What is your solution?
Our solution aims to build de-risked, economically viable farms that benefit farmers, the environment, human health, and biodiversity. We focus on developing managed farms by integrating science, engineering, technology, planning, operational efficiency, and commercial strategies to make regenerative agriculture viable at market prices.
Science: Translating academic research into field practices, we emphasize seed selection, companion planting, disease resistance, and optimizing plant nutrition to balance yield, deployment ease, and costs.
Engineering: Designing affordable, efficient, and robust solutions tailored for smallholder farmers ensures human-centric agriculture. Watershed management in farm layouts reduces risks and boosts benefits.
Technology: We deliver actionable practices to farmers in simple languages while leveraging weather data, IoT, and AI/ML models to improve decision-making and productivity while minimizing losses.
Planning and Operations: Collaboration with buyers and farmers enhances planting decisions, resource distribution, and storage efficiency, ensuring cost reduction and increasing produce value.
Commercial Focus: By hedging risks with diverse crops, aligning with market intelligence, and creating strong market linkages, farms become viable business units. This approach supports farmers transitioning to regenerative agriculture while ensuring profitability and sustainability at scale.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We aim to build solutions for farmers, addressing challenges faced by both smallholders and others. In India, the average income from agriculture is just $106 USD per month per acre, insufficient to meet family needs. This drives migration for work, leading to various socio-economic issues, further exacerbated by decreasing landholdings with each generation.
Our pilot approach has achieved revenues per acre that are 10 times higher than current averages. By channelling a portion of this, post-costs, to farmers, their incomes from farm operations could more than double. However, this requires a significant shift from conventional practices.
To overcome resistance, we are initially focusing on our own farms. This controlled environment enables us to refine the model, develop products, and build supply chain linkages needed for wider farmer adoption. Additionally, this strategy ensures financial independence for our company's growth. Currently concentrated in Udaipur, we operate leased farms to tailor solutions to the specific geography, climate, and context. These farms serve as live showrooms, showcasing the model's success. Once farmers are convinced to collaborate, the farms double as supply chain hubs for input needs and market linkage facilities for produce. This approach ensures scalability and viability for all stakeholders.
