What specific problem are you solving?
RealLives Simulation addresses the global empathy gap, lack of social-emotional learning (SEL), and limited real-world perspective in education. Many students grow up with limited exposure to diverse lived experiences, which can lead to cultural misunderstandings, social polarization, and poor decision-making in both personal and societal contexts.
Scale of the Problem
Empathy Decline: A University of Michigan study revealed a 40% decline in empathy among young people over the past 30 years. This trend has been linked to a reduction in social connection and an increased sense of individualism, which undermines cooperation and collective action.
SEL Deficiency: The World Economic Forum highlights social-emotional skills as essential for future success, but many educational systems worldwide fail to integrate these skills effectively. Without SEL, students are ill-prepared to manage emotions, build positive relationships, or solve complex global challenges.
Misinformation & Bias: Digital media has intensified misinformation and bias, with social platforms reinforcing stereotypes and distorting realities. A 2020 Pew Research Center report found that 62% of Americans get their news from social media, contributing to a fragmented understanding of the world and deepening global divisions.
These interconnected challenges impact millions of young people globally, limiting their ability to empathize, think critically, and engage in informed global citizenship.
What is your solution?
RealLives Simulation addresses the empathy gap, lack of social-emotional learning (SEL), and misinformation by providing an immersive, data-driven experience where users live virtual lives across diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
How RealLives Solves the Problem
Empathy Development: Players experience life from birth to death in different parts of the world, making real-life choices on education, careers, relationships, and survival. By navigating challenges like poverty, discrimination, and privilege, players develop a deeper understanding of global inequalities, fostering empathy for people from diverse backgrounds.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): The simulation encourages emotional intelligence, resilience, and ethical decision-making by exposing players to real-world dilemmas. This supports key SEL goals, such as self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making, equipping students with the skills needed to navigate complex social and personal situations.
Countering Misinformation & Bias: RealLives presents factual, data-driven scenarios that challenge stereotypes and provide a more nuanced understanding of global issues. Players experience the world through different perspectives, helping to counter media biases and develop critical thinking.
Scalability & Accessibility: As a game, RealLives is easily adopted by today’s generation, who are increasingly engaged with interactive learning. The simulation can be seamlessly integrated into educational systems, ensuring students develop compassion, perspective-taking, and informed global awareness.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
RealLives Simulation directly impacts learners aged 12 and older, particularly in K12 and higher education, by fostering empathy, social-emotional learning (SEL), and global awareness. It aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making it a valuable tool for addressing global challenges.
Target Population
K12 Students (12 years and older): Many students lack exposure to diverse lived experiences, limiting their understanding of global issues such as poverty, inequality, and social justice. SEL is often not fully integrated into curricula, leaving students unprepared for navigating complex global challenges.
Higher Education Students: University students, particularly in fields like business and social sciences, often lack emotional intelligence and global perspectives, which are essential for responsible leadership and decision-making.
How RealLives Addresses Their Needs
