What specific problem are you solving?
India’s missing middle population includes 500-600 million Indians, many in their 30s, living in families with a per capita income of USD 1000-1500 and working largely in the unorganized sector. Our work with India’s aspiring middle India population over the last 15 years has taught us that these consumers are uninsured and pay disproportionately high amounts out of pocket for their health and financial needs. They bear a high health burden, are susceptible to chronic diseases early in their lives and spend 10-14% of household income annually on health and financial resilience products. The high burden of these expenses is often due to the high cost of reaching these populations (which increases product pricing) and the lack of insights about this population (which limits price innovation and scale). Saathealth’s focus has been to leverage technology to reach, engage and aggregate demand from middle India consumers, expanding this market for supply side innovators. This would serve the health and financial needs of our population, build their resilience, support the foundation of India’s middle class and deliver positive outcomes to our families, creating positive social spin-offs while allowing us to tap into a USD 50 Billion market opportunity.
What is your solution?
Saathealth’s well-being marketplace is an omni-channel platform (webapp + social media + whatsapp chatbots) that connects emerging India consumers in multiple Indian languages, empowering them with three vital tools for their health and financial resilience journey – • Scientifically vetted, curated, local language content to increase awareness and guide choices • Scientific risk assessment tools that enable consumers to evaluate their health and related financial risks • Products and services that empower consumers to make choices that increase their resilience and well-being Our consumers find Saathealth via social media channels or via our community based entrepreneurs, that serve target communities. Users are onboarded onto the webapp journey with a combination of local language well-being options that include local language risk assessments, content as well as products and service. The risk assessments provide detailed consumer insights, allowing Saathealth to segment users based on age, gender, income levels, geography and reported health and financial risk status. Individual preferences, behaviors and choices are mapped to offer a continuous targeted journey via personalized chatbots. These variables are tracked longitudinally to guide future consumer experiences. Anonymized and aggregated consumer insights are used to support product bundling as well as to help supply side innovators with product and pricing innovation.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution focuses on the 500-600 million Indians that constitute India’s missing middle population, often described as too rich to qualify for government schemes and too poor to afford private healthcare. Our target consumers are in their 30s, with annual household income of USD 4-8k, work in the unorganized sector (including agri-related communities), are uninsured and pay for health and security benefits out of pocket. They live in rural as well as tier 1, 2 and 3 cities in urban slums. Our families bear high health burden early in life and spend high amounts on health and financial resilience products. They can access government services, but often use private services to avoid lost daily wages associated with availing government services. More than 57% of our families paid for a major hospitalization in the previous two years. Families often borrow from informal sources at high interest rates to pay high medical expenses. Our work with women consumers demonstrates that they typically bear a disproportionately high burden for health expenses. Saathealth has aggregated affordable products to address the needs of target consumers. Our marketplace plays a crucial role in generating awareness and guiding consumers towards affordable and relevant resilience products and services.
