What specific problem are you solving?
The mental health crisis among students in Sri Lanka has become a growing concern, with recent suicide reports highlighting the urgent need for intervention. Many students experience stress, anxiety, and other psychological challenges but lack access to professional support due to stigma, limited resources, and institutional barriers.
Additionally, the landscape of institutional responsibility has fundamentally changed— mental health support is no longer just an optional addition but a core duty of care. Schools and educational institutions are now expected to take proactive steps to support student well-being. Failing to do so not only put students at risk but also exposes institutions to legal and reputational consequences.
Key Challenges
• Lack of Accessible Mental Health Support – Many students do not have direct access to counselors.
• Stigma Around Mental Health – Fear of judgment prevents students from seeking help.
• Delayed Intervention – Schools often recognize mental health crises too late, leading to severe consequences.
• Institutional Accountability – Schools are now expected to actively provide well being support or face potential risks.
What is your solution?
This project aims to develop a Student Mental Health Support Platform to:
1. Provide Safe & Anonymous Support – Enable students to connect with counselors through 1-on-1 confidential chats and discuss issues on a public anonymous forum.
2. Increase Institutional Involvement – Offer schools a structured, data-driven solution to monitor and support student well-being proactively.
3. Enable Early Intervention – Leverage behavioral insights to detect rising stress patterns and provide alerts when student well-being declines.
4. Reduce Mental Health Stigma – Foster an open environment where students feel comfortable discussing challenges without fear.
5. Ensure 24/7 Access to Resources – Provide self-help materials, stress management tools, and crisis support at all times.
6. Strengthen Schools' Duty of Care – Help institutions meet their evolving responsibility toward student mental health, reducing legal and reputational risks.
This initiative will empower students, enhance institutional accountability, and create a proactive mental health ecosystem across the schools of Southern Asia.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our mental health platform directly serves 125 million students across South Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia) who are experiencing an unprecedented mental health crisis, with suicide attempts increasing 38% since 2019.
These students are profoundly underserved—87% of schools lack structured mental health support systems, and cultural stigma prevents 8 in 10 students from seeking traditional help. The economic impact is staggering: $255 billion in lost productivity across our target countries.
Our solution impacts students' lives in four transformative ways:
1. Breaking the stigma barrier through our proprietary anonymity system, enabling students to seek help without fear of identification—research shows this increases willingness to discuss sensitive topics by 60-80%
2. Providing immediate professional support via direct counselor connections and moderated forums when students need it most, preventing escalation
3. Ensuring cultural relevance through region-specific content and counseling approaches specifically designed for South Asian contexts, making mental health support accessible in ways Western models have failed to achieve
4. Creating system-level change by giving schools the tools to proactively protect student wellbeing through anonymized analytics, while our dual-tier approach ensures all students receive support regardless of resources
