The Bago-5,000 Trees Planting Initiative (B5KTsPI) is a community-led reforestation and agroforestry project designed to restore degraded lands, capture carbon, and improve local livelihoods. Our solution mobilizes farmers, youth, and community groups to plant 5,000 climate-resilient trees across 25 LGAs in Niger State. These trees provide shade, prevent soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and absorb CO₂, contributing to climate mitigation. We...

What specific problem are you solving?
We are addressing deforestation, climate change, and food insecurity in Niger State, Nigeria, through the Bago-5,000 Trees Planting Initiative (B5KTsPI). Niger State has lost over 60% of its forest cover, leading to rising temperatures, soil degradation, and reduced agricultural productivity, threatening the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. Globally, 10 million hectares of forest are lost annually, accelerating climate change and biodiversity loss. Nigeria ranks among the top five countries with the highest deforestation rates, worsening food insecurity for over 40 million rural dwellers. B5KTsPI directly addresses these challenges by: 1. Reforesting degraded lands to restore biodiversity and combat desertification. 2. Sequestering carbon to mitigate climate change. 3. Enhancing agroforestry to improve food security and boost farmers' incomes. By mobilizing local communities to plant 5,000 trees, we aim to create a scalable, climate-resilient model while generating carbon credit revenues to support long-term conservation and economic empowerment.
What is your solution?
The Bago-5,000 Trees Planting Initiative (B5KTsPI) is a community-led reforestation and agroforestry project designed to restore degraded lands, capture carbon, and improve local livelihoods. Our solution mobilizes farmers, youth, and community groups to plant 5,000 climate-resilient trees across 25 LGAs in Niger State. These trees provide shade, prevent soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and absorb CO₂, contributing to climate mitigation. We integrate agroforestry, where trees are planted alongside crops to improve soil fertility and boost agricultural productivity. This approach ensures long-term sustainability by creating economic incentives for farmers while restoring the environment. To monitor progress, we use drones and satellite mapping to track tree growth, assess biomass, and measure carbon sequestration. Drones provide high-resolution imagery, allowing early detection of threats such as pests, illegal logging, or land degradation. Additionally, we leverage carbon credit markets to generate revenue, reinvesting in further reforestation efforts and community development. By combining nature-based solutions, technology, and local participation, B5KTsPI creates a scalable, impactful model for environmental restoration and sustainable livelihoods.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The Bago-5,000 Trees Planting Initiative (B5KTsPI) serves smallholder farmers, rural communities, and youth across 25 LGAs in Niger State, Nigeria. These populations face deforestation, declining soil fertility, and economic instability, limiting their agricultural productivity and income. Farmers struggle with land degradation and erratic rainfall, reducing crop yields and increasing food insecurity. Youth in these communities face high unemployment rates due to limited economic opportunities. Additionally, climate change impacts over 40 million rural Nigerians, exacerbating poverty and environmental vulnerability. B5KTsPI directly benefits these groups by: Restoring degraded lands, improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Providing agroforestry training, equipping farmers with sustainable farming techniques. Creating jobs in tree planting, nursery management, and drone monitoring, offering economic empowerment for youth. Enhancing climate resilience, reducing the impact of desertification and extreme weather. Generating carbon credit revenue, reinvesting in local development projects. By integrating reforestation with economic incentives, B5KTsPI ensures that communities not only benefit environmentally but also gain long-term financial stability and food security.
