After training at the University of California, San Francisco Medical School, Laura Stachel practiced Ob-Gyn for 14 years before turning towards global maternal health. She obtained her MPH and then Doctorate in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Her ethnographic research in Nigeria alerted Stachel to the link between energy poverty and maternal mortality, and her dissertation focused on the experience of health workers in energy-poor health facilities. Stachel co-founded We Care Solar with her husband to promote clean energy for safe childbirth. She is passionate about health facility electrification. The team launched Light Every Birth to ensure every woman can access childbirth in a well-lit health facility.
