Growing up in a small town in China, I travelled to study in urban areas and more developed countries to pursue a Material Science and Engineering graduate degree as I am continuously fascinated by how technology can transform lives in both positive and negative ways. While technical, my PhD research topic encouraged me to embrace complexity and to apply paradigm-shifting ideas to tackle seemingly impossible problems that do not stop at the mathematically calculable, but can extend into the social areas that escape formulaic predictability. I was named a Forbes 30 under 30 in 2014 for my work on extending renewable energy to developing areas. From this success, I have grown more passionate and empowered about addressing mental health concerns after witnessing the personal suffering of misdiagnosed, undertreated patients with mental illness in developing and developed countries.
