SMILE, a SMart last-mILE Cooling System

The Problem

In 2014, 18.4 million children had no basic vaccinations and between 2 and 3 million died of a vaccine-preventable disease each year. Today, excluding Covid-19, the number of unvaccinated children has gone up to 19.9 million. Last-mild cold chain remains a challenge in many parts of the world.

The Solution

SMILE is a patented, smart, last-mile cooling system. SMILE is the only last-mile solution that reduces human error and vaccine spoilage. It is foolproof and freeze-free. SMILE can last for three to six days without power while monitoring and displaying the remaining cool-life. The self-closing door and the air-locking carousel mechanism mean that if health workers forget to close the lid, the temperature will still be maintained.

SMILE will help in last-mile applications for temperature-sensitive products and improve efficiency in critical research and end-to-end cold-chain applications worldwide.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves healthworkers delivering vaccines to remote, low-resource communities across difficult terrains. Following extensive field research in Nigeria and Madagascar, we designed SMILE—an intuitive, fail-safe smart device engineered to solve thermal control issues and human error during transportation and injection sessions. SMILE impacts healthworkers and underserved populations in key ways: Eliminates Temperature Errors: Built-in safeguards prevent vaccine degradation, even when healthworkers make procedural mistakes or open lids repeatedly in extreme weather. Maximizes Outreach Capacity: Carrying 500 to 700+ doses with extended cold-life, SMILE enables workers to vaccinate multiple villages per trip rather than making frequent returns for ice replenishment. Improves Usability: Designed alongside end-users to ensure practical, intuitive handling without adding technical friction. Real-Time Data Guidance: Upgraded features provide temperature monitoring and cold-life predictions, giving field workers full confidence in vaccine potency during last-mile deliveries.
