What specific problem are you trying to solve?

There are three main issues related to environmental and social issues in Indonesia that we are trying to overcome. Regarding Greenhouse Gases and Plastic Waste, in 2021 there are around 250 million tons of CO2 and 300 million tons of plastic waste disposed of into the environment. This pollution will continue to increase every year and can exacerbate environmental problems and global warming. The next problem is related to access to safe drinking water in Indonesia. Based on study, in 2021 only about 15 percent of people in urban areas and only about 8 percent of people in rural areas can access safe drinking water.

What is your solution?

Here the Water Coin tries to overcome this problem by providing access to hygienic drinking water while reducing global warming and plastic waste. Water Coin focuses on solving the problem of drinking water availability, through water management and treatment, digitization and environmental considerations. Water Coin is a solution that:

  1. Solves the problems produced by the bottled water industry
  2. Changes people's habits to live zero waste, and
  3. Finally protects the environment as a sustainable innovation.

Water Coin offers drinking water filtering and distribution machines. Through our machines, people easily get safe drinking water. In addition, Water Coin utilizes new renewable energy and is able to filter water from various sources into drinking water with national drinking water quality requirements & standards.

Who does your solution serve? In what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Water Coin provide access to drinking water with target beneficiaries in densely populated urban areas, public spaces (park, school, etc) and rural areas as well as remote areas where it is difficult to access safe drinking water. With economic class beneficiaries are middle to lower.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?

Water Coin team has various studies and scientific backgrounds. With the cohesiveness and synergy of abilities between team members so that we were able to successfully complete our previous implementation projects.Here is our team :

What steps have you taken to understand the needs of the population you want to serve?

Water Coin Machine implementation MVP project in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, by providing access to our drinking water starting around December 2021. Currently we have distributed more than 500 Liters of drinking water, saving 120 KWh of electricity and reduction of greenhouse gases from the use of solar panels by 100 kgCO2e.

What makes your solution innovative?

Water Coin provide access to drinking water using environmentally friendly technology and methods. We utilize digital technology and IoT for water sales payment systems as well as drinking water quality monitoring, and Water Coin machine controls. We also use new, renewable energy sources to meet the electric power needs of the Water Coin machine and the Water Coin machine is designed to be easily assembled and moved, so that if a disaster occurs, our machine can be present to provide access to drinking water for disaster-affected communities.

What are your impact goals for the next year, and how will you achieve them?

Water Coin impact target for 2023 and the next 5 years is to implement more machines, by raising funds through the competitions we participate in. We have won several competitions, with one of the prizes being awarded a funding opportunity of around 1 Billion IDR or 64 K USD (pre seed around) in Q1 2023. We have plan to create our second MVP in Q1 2023, and continue with the construction of our workshop production site, with production capacity of 64 machines/year. It is projected that for the next 5 years we will be able to:

  1. Implements about 397 machines
  2. GHG reduction of 108 tCO2e or the equivalent of saving by 4,695 trees
  3. Plastics Reduction from Bottled Water Industry of 1,221 tons
  4. Electricity saved from Solar Panels of 0.56 GWh
  5. Minimum job/partner created 400

By participating in this event we also hope to earn rewards which we will use to magnify and expand the impact of the Water Coin innovation.

Describe the core technology that powers your solution.

Water Coin offer our products in the form of refill stations that can filter raw water or only distribute drinking water from brands such as Danone AQUA, Le Minerale and so on by combining the concept of digitization and the use of new and renewable energy. There are some key features of our machine such as being able to filter raw water from PAM Water, Rainwater into ready-to-drink water. Our machine design easy to move and assembly, so that in the event of a disaster our machine can be present, and provide access to drinking water with a production capacity of up to 1000 liters / day. We developed an application that can make it easier for people to find out the location of our machines and digital transactions using digital wallets in the application.

The technology in Water Coin machine is a combination of Automation system, Digitization of payments,IoT Monitoring and Control, Water filter technology (Metal drinking water filters, bio membranes, Reverse Osmosis filter systems, UV irridation and Ultrafiltration), as well as utilization of new energy from use of Solar Panels and deep cycle VRLA Batteries to store their electrical energy.

How many people does your solution currently serve, and how many do you plan to serve in the next year? If you haven’t yet launched your solution, tell us how many people you plan to serve in the next year.

To date Water Coin have distributed more than 500 Liters of drinking water to the people in Sleman, Indonesia. Assuming that the daily need for drinking water is 2 liters, we estimate that there are 20-50 local residents who receive services from our machines. Water Coin machines are also on several occasions present at music concerts to provide drinking water, so that music concert spectators do not produce plastic waste, with an estimate that we serve more than 50 people. So that the total estimated impact of our machine services is for a total of 70-100 people.

What barriers currently exist for you to accomplish your goals in the next year?

For the current challenges, we are still seeking additional funds to build workshops and to partner with the government in regulating the use of plastic packaging in the drinking water and beverage industry. We participated in several incubation and acceleration events as well as networking events, with the hope of being able to approach the community while preparing the Water Coin organization for a wider and bigger impact.

What is your business model?

The availability of drinking water, has a very important role in improving the quality of the environment or public health. Until now, the provisionof clean water to the community is still faced with some complex problems and until now has not been fully overcome. Since bottled water entered Indonesia in 1975, the habits of Indonesians have changed from boiled water to bottled water. The share of bottled water in Indonesia is predicted to continue to increase every year. In 2013 the market value of the Bottled drinking water industry was 22.51 trillion Rupiah, it is estimated to grow 5 - 11.1% per year. Based on data from ASPADIN, national bottled water sales throughout 2020 were in the range of 29 billion liters. We conduct market research to see the market potential of our innovations. From the data we curate related to the sales of the drinking water industry which is increasing every year and the need for drinking water in Indonesia with a potential SOM of around 260 million USD.

We offer several business models, for B2C we sell drinking water directly and admin fees from applications that we develop in the future. For now we are trying to focus on the B2B business model which is to do machine manufacturing.

What is your path to financial sustainability?

For the first funding we target a need of around 150 K USD. With the opportunity that we got in Q1 2023 for 64K USD, we plan to develop the existing technology of our first MVP, by continuing to set up a production workshop and purchase production and operational equipment. Fund usage plan :
