What specific problem are you solving?
FlySpreader addresses the critical lack of accessible, affordable, and accurate diagnostic tools in low-resource and remote settings. In many parts of Africa and other underserved regions, laboratory infrastructure is either limited or completely absent. This leads to delayed or incorrect diagnoses, especially for diseases like malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and non-communicable diseases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 50% of the global population lacks access to essential diagnostic services. In sub-Saharan Africa, only 1 in 10 people have access to basic laboratory testing. The situation is worse in rural areas, where transporting samples to centralized labs leads to delays, degraded samples, and increased costs.
Contributing factors include:
Lack of skilled personnel and bulky, expensive lab equipment
Power outages and unreliable infrastructure
Fragmented data management and poor continuity of care
FlySpreader solves these challenges by offering a portable, AI-powered, low-energy diagnostic device capable of performing tests across Hematology, Biochemistry, and Serology—all in one. It stores patient data on the cloud, enabling continuity of care and epidemiological tracking.
By simplifying diagnostics, reducing costs, and enabling timely decision-making, FlySpreader has the potential to transform healthcare for millions in underserved communities.
What is your solution?
FlySpreader is an innovative, portable, AI-powered diagnostic device designed to bring laboratory-quality testing to remote and underserved areas. Unlike traditional lab equipment, FlySpreader is compact, energy-efficient, and affordable—making it ideal for deployment in low-resource settings.
The device performs a wide range of diagnostic tests across Hematology (e.g., peripheral blood film analysis), Biochemistry (e.g., LFTs, RFTs, electrolytes), and Serology (e.g., blood grouping) using an easy-to-load, cartridge-based system. With integrated AI and Machine Learning, it interprets complex results accurately and swiftly, reducing reliance on highly skilled personnel.
FlySpreader stores diagnostic data securely in the cloud, allowing healthcare providers to access patient history, monitor trends, and integrate with public health systems in real time. This feature is critical in areas where recordkeeping is often paper-based and fragmented.
By simplifying diagnostics and enabling point-of-care testing, FlySpreader reduces the burden on overstretched health systems and brings timely care to patients—ultimately improving outcomes, especially for diseases like HIV, malaria, TB, and non-communicable diseases.
The solution has been prototyped, is in the process of being patented, and has already gained interest from medical professionals. With further funding and partnerships, FlySpreader can scale to serve millions across Africa and beyond.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
FlySpreader is designed to serve patients, healthcare workers, and researchers in low-resource and remote communities, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa and other underserved regions globally.
Primary beneficiaries include:
Patients in remote areas who currently lack access to timely, accurate, and affordable diagnostic services. FlySpreader enables point-of-care testing, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment, and improving health outcomes for diseases like malaria, TB, HIV, and non-communicable diseases.
Medical Laboratory Scientists and clinicians who face challenges such as limited equipment, power outages, and heavy workloads. FlySpreader simplifies testing processes, reduces manual labor, and increases efficiency and diagnostic accuracy through AI-powered analysis.
Researchers and public health programs that need reliable data from field settings. With integrated cloud storage and data sharing, FlySpreader enhances data collection, monitoring, and decision-making for disease control efforts.
