What specific problem are you solving?
Colombia's Pacific Coast, home to 8 million people, faces a silent educational crisis. A staggering 7.6% are illiterate, and PISA results reveal significant learning gaps, with ninth-graders struggling in reading comprehension. This deficit hinders future academic success for a substantial portion of the next generation.
This emergency stems from interconnected challenges: decades of conflict and displacement disrupt learning; inadequate infrastructure isolates communities; deep-rooted inequality limits educational quality; limited healthcare access, compounded by high adolescent pregnancy rates (72 per 1,000 teens), further jeopardizes attainment; a struggling informal economy and high unemployment (11.5% in 2024) restrict families' ability to invest in education; and pervasive discrimination against Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities traps them in poverty (over 33%).
This isn't just statistics; it's a generation at risk in a vital Colombian region. Without intervention, instability will persist, hindering the nation's potential. We urgently need an innovative solution to break this cycle and invest in quality education for the Pacific Coast's youth.
What is your solution?
Driven by 160 civil society members, Green Schools of The Pacific addresses critical educational needs in Colombia's Pacific Coast. This community-led initiative fosters a network of expertise and resources to engineer structural solutions against poverty and inequality. Our core solution involves constructing six strategic educational institutions: three large schools in Quibdó, Tumaco, and Buenaventura (cities more populated and the poorest), and three smaller ones in Timbiquí, Guapi, and Nuquí or Condoto (rural areas near to conflict zones).
These dynamic hubs will feature resilient infrastructure, digital connectivity, bilingual and intercultural curricula with a strong environmental focus, and qualified teachers. Community participation is central. To achieve this, we've organized into key nodes: architectural (sustainable design), educational (community-based, high-quality learning), sustainability (network maintenance), fundraising, and scholarship (teacher training).
Annually, 4,000 young people and their 2,000 families will benefit, gaining enhanced skills through our educational model. Additionally, 80 existing teachers will be retrained in quality education methodologies, and 100 promising youth with a vocation for teaching will receive bachelor's degrees in various fields to be hired within the Green Schools network.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Green Schools of the Pacific targets 3 million school-aged children and adolescents in the predominantly Afro-descendant (and 20% indigenous) Pacific region, who currently lack access to quality education. Public schools, the majority offering, demonstrate low quality, evidenced by poor PISA results, particularly in reading comprehension and maths among ninth-graders. This highlights a significant gap and an urgent need for structural investment in public education, especially in Chocó and Valle del Cauca. The initiative also targets 180 young teachers, offering scholarships for bachelor's degrees to create a well-prepared teaching force committed to their communities.
The solution is a network of innovative schools providing quality, culturally relevant, and sustainable education. This holistic approach integrates culturally adapted pedagogy, sustainable and contextually appropriate infrastructure, and robust teacher training and support. Green Schools aims to improve educational outcomes, preserve ancestral knowledge, foster environmental stewardship, and empower communities for social mobility.
Leveraging pedagogical technology (blending modern and traditional knowledge), architectural technology (bioclimatic and sustainable school design), and network technology (knowledge sharing and resource optimization), Green Schools of the Pacific is a multi-faceted solution creating a transformative educational ecosystem for children facing inequities.
