What specific problem are you solving?
Individuals with special needs often face significant barriers to developing essential independent living skills especially after graduating from SPED schools. These skills—such as navigating transport, managing hygiene—are critical for autonomy, yet are rarely taught in ways that meet diverse learning needs. Teaching them effectively requires breaking tasks down into small, structured steps and reinforcing them consistently over time. This places a heavy burden on educators, parents, and caregivers, who often lack the tools, time, or training to deliver such individualized instruction. As a result, many learners are left behind—dependent on others for basic tasks and lacking the confidence to navigate daily life. Financial literacy adds another layer of vulnerability. Without understanding concepts like earning, budgeting, or saving, individuals with special needs are more susceptible to exploitation and poor decision-making. Yet financial education is often inaccessible, abstract, or disconnected from real-life practice. Globally, millions of individuals with disabilities face these same challenges. The lack of accessible, ongoing life skills education not only limits personal independence, but also contributes to long-term caregiver stress and social exclusion.
What is your solution?
Budding Life is a gamified learning app that helps individuals with special needs build essential life skills—like budgeting, shopping, and managing daily routines—through structured, hands-on practice. Educators and caregivers use the app to create real-world learning tasks (such as “buying a drink” or “taking the bus”) and break them down into manageable steps using a built-in task analysis tool. These tasks are then completed by learners in real life. As they complete each step, they earn virtual tokens—just like earning money. Once they’ve earned enough tokens, learners can decide how to spend or save them, and “redeem” their rewards by utilising simulated digital payment methods like QR code or card with their teacher or caregiver—turning everyday routines into teachable financial moments. To support educators and caregivers of all experience levels, SpedGrow also includes an open resource library. This allows users to access and reuse task analyses created by others, helping those who are new to special education get started quickly while increasing consistency and effectiveness across different learning environments. The app combines task-based learning, progress tracking, gamification, and simulated digital payments to create a practical and empowering way to teach life skills at scale.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Individuals with special needs often do not have access to quality, ongoing education—especially after graduating from SPED schools. The reality is that their continued learning depends heavily on the people around them: caregivers, parents, and educators. However, these adults are often under-resourced, overburdened, and may not have the training to break down skills like budgeting, shopping, or using transport into structured, teachable steps. SpedGrow directly addresses this gap by empowering caregivers and educators with a practical, easy-to-use platform that transforms everyday life skills into guided, step-by-step learning experiences. Users can assign tasks, track progress, and access an open library of task analyses created by others—making it easier to deliver consistent, relevant education, even with limited time or experience. By equipping caregivers and educators to become more effective teachers, SpedGrow ensures that individuals with special needs receive the quality, ongoing learning they deserve. This leads to real outcomes: learners grow in confidence, build independence, and gain functional skills to navigate daily life.
