What specific problem are you solving?
4 million Kenyans suffer from chronic Kidney disease. Ten percent of these require immediate care for end-stage renal disease which is renal replacement therapy. There are only 214 dialysis units in Kenya with an urban centric distribution. 73% of the dialysis units are in urban areas yet more than 60% of patients are from rural and peri urban areas. Patients travel up to 200KM (one way) to receive dialysis, spending and average of $10per day. Because of the long distances these patients have to be accompanied by a family caregiver leading to lost economic opportunities. Patients have to make this excruciating journey twice a week for the rest of their lives.
What is your solution?
We equip 40 and 20 ft shipping containers with dialysis machines, drainage and solar systems and deploy them to rural communities as mobile units. We set up at designated community health centers or outreach points on a rotating schedule i.e point A Mondays and Thursday. This way patients receive regular dialysis closer to home. Through our solution, we help patients reduce distance travelled by over half and hence reducing the emotional, financial and social costs of long travel for care.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Patients with chronic Kidney disease in rural areas of Kenya face a significant challenge in accessing dialysis services. More than 73% of dialysis centers being in urban areas, the patients have to travel up to 200km twice a week for the rest of their lives, in order to get this life saving therapy. Because of the logistical challenges and lack of adequate finances for transport ,patients often delay or miss their treatments leading to heart complications and even death. our solution reduces travel distance making dialysis available very close to the patients by reducing travel distance by up to 80% hence more consistent treatments and better clinical and social outcomes
