What specific problem are you solving?
In Rwanda and many parts of Africa, smallholder farmers—who make up over 70% of the agricultural workforce—struggle to access reliable markets, timely agricultural information, and climate-smart resources. This leads to post-harvest losses of up to 30%, reduced income, cheap and fresh produce straight from the farm.
Here are some of the problem involved: a broken value chain and a lack of digital inclusion. Farmers often rely on middlemen who exploit them and gives them less money which keeps them poor, while urban consumers face high prices and inconsistent supply and also times to time low quality and bad produce. Globally, food systems are responsible for over 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, yet small-scale farmers and key to sustainable food production and remain disconnected from green innovation.
Isoko natirele addresses this by creating a digital platform that connects farmers directly to local markets, provides climate-smart tips, and promotes low-carbon, sustainable agriculture.
This challenge affects over 500 million smallholder farms globally and 2.5 million farmers in Rwanda. By digitizing access and shortening the supply chain, isoko natirele offers a scalable, climate-smart solution that empowers farmers and builds sustainable urban food systems.
What is your solution?
Isoko natirele is a digital platform that allows consumers such as households, restaurants, and schools to easily access fresh fruits and vegetables directly from nearby smallholder farmers. Through the platform, buyers can browse available produce, compare prices, and place orders with just a few clicks.
Behind the scenes, we help farmers list their harvests using a simple, mobile-friendly web app. Once a buyer places an order, the platform connects them directly to the farmer for pick-up or local delivery. This reduces reliance on middlemen, lowers costs, and ensures produce reaches the consumer faster and fresher.
The platform is built with accessible web technologies, designed for low-bandwidth environments, and works on basic smartphones. Currently piloted with plenty of farmers in Rwanda, isoko natirele is transforming how food moves from farm to table creating fairer markets, reducing food waste, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Isoko Natirele serves two primary groups: urban consumers in need of fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables, and smallholder farmers—especially youth and women—who struggle to access reliable markets and climate-smart farming tools.
In Rwanda, most smallholder farmers live in rural areas and lack access to fair pricing, digital platforms, or real-time agricultural information. They rely heavily on middlemen who often take the largest share of profits, leaving farmers with limited income and no control over their produce's value. At the same time, many urban families face high food prices and have limited access to fresh, locally sourced produce.
Isoko Natirele solves this by offering a digital platform where farmers can list their harvests, and consumers can buy directly from them. This cuts out intermediaries, ensures better prices for farmers, and delivers fresher produce to buyers. Additionally, the platform offers eco-farming tips, weather updates, and market insights to help farmers improve yields and adapt to climate change.
The impact is twofold: farmers earn more and waste less, while urban communities gain healthier, more affordable food options. The platform empowers local food systems, strengthens livelihoods, and promotes greener, more connected communities.
