What specific problem are you solving?
I am addressing the decline in bee populations and unsustainable farming practices that threaten food security, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods in Kenya. In many Kenyan communities, especially rural areas, farmers struggle with low crop yields due to climate change, poor pollination, and land degradation. According to the UN, bees pollinate about 75% of global food crops, yet Kenya has seen a sharp decline in bee colonies due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate stress. This affects over 5 million smallholder farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Additionally, lack of awareness and resources prevents farmers from adopting eco-friendly practices. My solution introduces climate-smart beekeeping as a tool for environmental conservation, improved pollination, and income generation. By integrating beehives into farms, farmers can boost crop production, restore ecosystems, and earn from organic honey. This tackles both environmental degradation and rural poverty, creating a scalable, sustainable impact.
What is your solution?
My solution is County Beekeepers Ltd, a social enterprise that promotes climate-smart beekeeping to boost food security, incomes, and biodiversity in Kenya. I train smallholder farmers to integrate modern beehives into their farms, enhancing crop pollination while producing organic honey. The beehives are eco-friendly and locally made to reduce costs and increase accessibility. I also use digital tools such as WhatsApp and voice recordings in local languages to provide remote guidance, monitor hive health, and share climate-smart farming tips. The honey is harvested, blended for sustainability and health benefits, then sold to local markets and institutions. By turning farms into pollinator-friendly spaces, I empower farmers to restore ecosystems, adapt to climate change, and earn additional income. This approach combines indigenous knowledge with practical technology to create a low-cost, scalable solution for rural communities.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
My solution serves low-income smallholder farmers, especially women and youth in rural Kenya, who are vulnerable to climate change and lack access to sustainable income opportunities. These communities often face food insecurity, declining crop yields due to poor pollination, and limited economic prospects. Many rely on traditional farming methods that are not climate-resilient and offer minimal returns. County Beekeepers Ltd empowers them by providing modern, low-cost beehives, climate-smart training, and a ready market for their honey. This enables farmers to diversify income, improve crop productivity through pollination, and adapt to environmental changes. The solution also creates employment opportunities, particularly for women involved in honey processing and youth in distribution. By blending indigenous knowledge with accessible technology and ecological practices, I help restore degraded land, support biodiversity, and build financial resilience among underserved populations.
