What specific problem are you solving?
Among Indonesia's 64 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs - which represent 99.9% of all businesses and employ 97% of the workforce), the majority operate informally with limited business management knowledge. This knowledge gap directly impacts their financial performance, with most Indonesian MSMEs operating without proper financial records or business plans. In a 2024 research survey, 73.96% of MSMEs said they had many problems running their business due to 1) getting funds (38.84%), 2) marketing (25.00%), and 3) getting raw material (22.29%).
The consequences are severe: approximately 40% of Indonesians (112 million people) are considered economically insecure. Low revenues trap owners and their families in cycles of financial insecurity—many live just above subsistence levels and cannot cover unexpected expenses. During economic downturns, these vulnerable entrepreneurs often deplete personal resources to keep businesses afloat, further eroding household resilience.
This also negatively impacts Indonesia’s economy as a whole. The World Bank notes that labor productivity has been dropping, from $7,530 per worker in 2015 to $5,336 in 2023. Furthermore, Indonesia is 6th in the world for wealth inequality, and job growth in large firms has not kept pace with revenue growth compared to other economies.
What is your solution?
UMKMall is an online learning platform that provides focused, curated, and contextualized business education content and support for MSME entrepreneurs. The online content will be learning pathways covering topics such as digital marketing and financial literacy. Each pathway runs 4-6 weeks with self-paced units featuring 10-15 minute videos, enabling busy MSME entrepreneurs to consume content in shorter bursts on their own schedule.
Complementing the pathway content, an AI assistant coach will help users to assess which pathways would most impact their business, and assists them with comprehension and practically implementing ideas to their business. Participants also receive one coaching session with an industry expert during the 4-6 week period to address challenging problems and fill gaps that the AI coach cannot handle.
Additionally, we provide network support through facilitated online groups and vendors. During the group sessions (1.5 hours), participants discuss coursework application to their businesses while connecting with other owners facing similar challenges, creating a community learning environment. Our price-aware vendor network offers participants immediate options for digital tools and outsourcing services for tasks they don't feel comfortable handling themselves.
Our vision is for microenterprises to become small businesses, and small businesses to become medium businesses.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
This solution focuses on Indonesia’s 30 million MSME entrepreneurs who run businesses or exchange goods and services (distinct from the agricultural economy) and who have access to the internet. These entrepreneurs have limited access to education, and while various organizations have attempted to help, efforts have been geographically isolated—resulting in 95.83% of MSMEs reporting they never received support from either government or private sector.
UMKMall's online platform provides practical business education content and support that entrepreneurs can immediately apply to improve their business outcomes. This education increases individuals' capacity for productivity, compounding into greater economic opportunity over time.
As users demonstrate their capabilities through course performance and business application, we aim to grant access to a community of graduates that can signal a status of capability and creditworthiness. This verification could help them meet banks' requirements for preferential lending rates, expanding their access to much-needed capital.
A 2024 IMF report notes that limited access to finance and low financial literacy in unstable revenues for many MSME entrepreneurs is pushing them towards insecurity. UMKMall's platform directly addresses both of these critical drivers by improving financial knowledge and facilitating access to financial services.
