What specific problem are you solving?
Access to specialized healthcare is a pressing challenge in Kenya, particularly for rural and underserved communities. Kijabe Hospital, a faith/mission-based teaching and referral center with expert doctors and missionaries, is a hopeful beacon providing referral care to those who may not afford this care in private hospitals or access it in government hospitals. Millions of Kenyans live in rural areas, where healthcare facilities are scarce, and specialist care is often unaffordable or unavailable. Through our outreach missions in remote regions like Maralal, Garissa, and Pokot identify patients needing specialist intervention, yet follow-up care remains a logistical and financial barrier. Our innovative telemedicine solution, built with Laravel and integrated with Zoom and M-Pesa, addresses these gaps to a great extent. By enabling virtual consultations with Kijabe’s specialists, we bring expert care directly to patients’ communities. M-Pesa integration ensures affordable, seamless payments, while Zoom facilitates real-time, compassionate doctor-patient interactions. This solution empowers us to follow up with the 10-20 patients we’ve already served daily and scale to millions, transforming lives by making specialized care accessible, affordable, and empathetic, regardless of distance or economic barriers.
What is your solution?
Our solution is a comprehensive and robust telemedicine platform based on PHP Laravel, designed to deliver remote healthcare services. It uses WebRTC for real-time communication, Zoom integration for secure video consultations, and M-Pesa Daraja API for seamless payments. The platform includes three dashboards: Doctor dashboard: manage consultations and patient records Super admin dashboard: oversee system operations and manage users Patient dashboard: schedule appointments, access health info, and pay It also features a telepharmacy service, partnering with G4S to deliver medications to patients. For diagnostics, we collaborate with Dr. Kalebi Labs for remote lab and pathology services, integrating with the hospital’s HMIS via SQL Server or ODBC to update patient files in real-time. Future plans include integrating medical devices like Healthy.io and TytoCare for remote monitoring, and deploying telemedicine kits, though currently limited by hospital finances. Here’s how it works: Patients register, book appointments, and pay via M-Pesa through the patient dashboard. They consult doctors via Zoom, receive prescriptions, and get medications delivered by G4S. Doctors order lab tests remotely, and results sync directly to patient records, ensuring seamless care.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
So far, we have been able to see 30 patients in the nascent stages of rolling out the solution. Some of the demographics so far are Nairobi (8), Kiambu (5), Kilifi (3), Nakuru (2), Garissa (1), Kajiado (1), Kisii (1), Laikipia (1), Turkana (1), and 2 international patients. In what ways are they currently underserved? These individuals and areas are underserved due to: - Limited specialized care in rural areas such as Turkana and Garissa lack expertise for conditions such as lymphomas (C84.94) and breast cancer (D05.11). - Remote regions have minimal healthcare facilities and extending care to such regions would mean improving access to care. - Even though Nairobi is an urban area, patients here struggle with access amid overburdened systems. - Chronic condition management: Hypertension (I10) and prediabetes (R73.3) require ongoing care, often unavailable. Through the platform, we deliver specialist consultations virtually, reaching remote patients. Enables early diagnosis and treatment, e.g., for cancer and goiter (E04.2). Provides consistent monitoring, supporting orthopaedic follow-ups (Z47.9) and chronic conditions. Enhances affordability and access, partnering with local labs and delivery services, ensuring compassionate, effective care for all.
