What specific problem are you solving?
Learning to speak English, even to an intermediate level, boosts incomes and education opportunities globally. However, the opportunity to access high quality English teaching is generally only available to those who are wealthy, and/or those who live in major cities. This is creating an "English gap" that is exacerbating inequality both between and within countries globally.
This is because lower income people, and those in smaller towns and rural areas, lack good English teachers, and lack the ability to pay for high quality online teaching or tech products.
Free to use apps are no substitute for high quality teaching - you cannot learn to speak a language practicing vocab on an app. Also, the vast majority of our target students and communities do not have access to these apps.
AI tutors may have future promise, but currently are far too expensive and inaccessible for low income, non major city students.
We need a solution that brings evidence driven, in person English teaching to low income, younger students and those not in major cities - and we need it urgently, to stop the global divergence in income and opportunity created by the English gap.
What is your solution?
Our teacher app enables undertrained teachers, even those with limited English, to deliver high-quality English lessons. With a single tap, the app plays a research-based lesson using text-to-speech in a clear, international accent, alongside supporting images to enhance understanding (dual coding). It works offline and students do not need their own device (only the teacher does, so 1 mobile per classroom plus 1 projector is all that's needed).
Each lesson is interactive. For example, an image of a girl riding a bicycle appears, and the audio says, “The girl is riding a bicycle.” It then asks, “What is the girl doing?” Based on the students’ response, the teacher selects the next step: a more advanced task if they answer well, or a corrective path with targeted repetition if not. The system uses data to link errors to previous learning gaps.
This approach accelerates English acquisition in low-income and rural settings, providing hundreds of hours of structured, evidence-based language instructions.
The app also supports regular automated assessments, allowing teachers and developers to track progress, refine lesson quality, and generate valuable research data. While the lessons are delivered by the app, the teacher remains central, using student responses to guide adaptive learning pathways
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves students (and their communities) from low income or non major city backgrounds, who cannot currently access high quality English teaching.
Currently, because they cannot access high quality teaching in their area, and they cannot afford or access high quality online or digital tools, they cannot learn English.
Our solution will allow them to access high quality English teaching via anyone in their community with a mobile - their teacher, a volunteer, even an older student or sibling or their parent. Crucially, it enables the interactive (human or voice to text) English speaking between teacher and student that is a crucial part of learning a language.
This will allow them to access greater job and education opportunities. Changing their lives, but also allowing them to fund better housing, healthcare, and schooling for their community.
