What specific problem are you solving?
Kora Quest addresses the lack of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education among adolescents in remote communities, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many girls grow up without access to accurate, age-appropriate SRHR information due to stigma, poor infrastructure, and outdated curricula. This contributes to early pregnancies, period poverty, school dropouts, and exploitation. Globally, over 257 million women aged 15–49 in developing regions lack access to modern contraception (UNFPA, 2022). In Sub-Saharan Africa, only 24% of adolescent girls receive comprehensive sexuality education (UNESCO, 2023). In Ethiopia and Rwanda over 8 million girls aged 13–18 face these same barriers. In Ethiopia, 40% of girls are married before 18 and nearly 13% by age 15 (UNICEF, 2021), often linked to a lack of education. Kora Quest delivers SRHR education through interactive, culturally relevant gameplay that promotes learning, dialogue, and confidence. It addresses misinformation and taboos, giving young people the tools to make informed decisions about their health and futures.
What is your solution?
Kora Quest is a gamified, offline-first mobile learning tool that empowers adolescents in remote communities with accurate, engaging Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education. Designed to overcome connectivity and cultural barriers, it uses interactive storytelling, quizzes, and myth-busting games to simplify complex SRHR topics for youth, especially girls aged 13–18. Once installed, the mobile app works entirely offline, making it ideal for underserved communities with limited internet access. Learners play through story-based quests, earn badges, and explore localized modules on menstruation, consent, puberty, and reproductive rights. We've integrated a WhatsApp-based chatbot powered by a Large Language Model (LLM) to expand access and interactivity. This AI-driven tool allows youth to ask SRHR-related questions anonymously and receive reliable, context-aware answers in local languages via a platform available to billions of users. Kora Quest combines mobile gaming, AI-driven chat support, and culturally grounded design to make learning sticky, safe, and scalable. It also includes a backend dashboard to help educators and health workers track engagement and address gaps. By merging play and AI, we bring inclusive, youth-led SRHR education directly to those who need it most.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Kora Quest serves adolescents aged 13–18 in remote and underserved communities, with a particular focus on girls who lack access to accurate, stigma-free Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education. These young people often navigate puberty, menstruation, and relationships without trusted guidance, leading to early pregnancies, period shame, and school dropouts. Through culturally grounded, gamified learning, Kora Quest equips adolescents with age-appropriate SRHR knowledge in a fun, safe, and judgment-free way. Players build critical thinking, challenge harmful myths, and gain confidence to make informed decisions about their health and futures. For girls, this directly translates into fewer early pregnancies, improved menstrual health, and higher chances of staying in school. Beyond individual users, Kora Quest also empowers educators and community leaders by offering a practical tool to facilitate honest, inclusive conversations around SRHR, especially in settings where such topics are traditionally silenced. In our recent pilots across Ethiopia and Rwanda, over 2500 students engaged with the game, and 81% reported an improved understanding of key SRHR topics compared to classroom lectures. This real-world impact demonstrates our solution’s power to shift knowledge, mindsets, and possibilities for the next generation.
