What specific problem are you solving?
Indonesia faces severe, recurring floods that affect over 110 million people, or 40% of the national population, living in flood-prone areas. From 2010 to 2023, more than 2,500 major floods caused $6.7 billion in economic losses (World Bank, 2023). These floods displace thousands annually, disrupt agriculture and infrastructure, and endanger public health. The problem is worsening due to climate change, deforestation, poor drainage, and uncoordinated water management systems.
A major contributor to this crisis is the reliance on manual flood monitoring and reactive response systems, which delay evacuation efforts and reduce the effectiveness of water flow control via existing water gates. Many flood-prone areas lack real-time data infrastructure, making early warnings and coordinated action nearly impossible.
Our solution addresses this by developing a Community-Led IoT-Based Flood Control Information System (Atur Air). It combines real-time sensors, automated water gate control, and a mobile/web platform to provide timely alerts, live monitoring, and data-driven decision-making tools. By modernizing flood control and empowering communities to act on accurate data, Atur Air not only mitigates flooding locally but serves as a scalable model for vulnerable regions globally.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the IoT-Based Flood Control Information System (Atur Air)—a smart, community-oriented system designed to monitor, predict, and manage floods in real time. It uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology to connect sensors, automated water gates, and a digital dashboard to help communities and local authorities make fast, informed decisions during flood events.
Atur Air works by installing sensors in rivers, canals, and flood-prone areas to continuously measure water level, rainfall, and flow rate. This data is sent to a cloud-based platform, where it is analyzed and visualized on a mobile and web application. The system issues real-time alerts, showing live conditions and providing evacuation recommendations when needed.
A key feature is the automated water gate control system, which can open or close gates based on sensor data. This helps regulate water flow to prevent flooding and protect downstream communities. Authorities can also manually override the system when necessary.
By combining automation, real-time data, and citizen-friendly apps, Atur Air empowers local communities to respond proactively to flood risks—reducing damage, saving lives, and improving disaster preparedness. The system is low-cost, scalable, and adaptable to different regions, especially those vulnerable to climate-driven disasters.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves vulnerable communities living in flood-prone areas across Indonesia, particularly in rural and peri-urban regions where flood management infrastructure is limited. These populations—often including farmers, low-income families, and small businesses—are frequently affected by flooding that damages homes, destroys crops, and disrupts livelihoods. Many currently lack access to early warning systems, real-time information, or effective flood prevention tools.
The Atur Air (IoT-Based Flood Control Information System) directly addresses these gaps by providing a real-time flood monitoring and response system that empowers communities to act early and reduce disaster impacts. The mobile app delivers live water level data and early warnings, helping residents make timely decisions such as evacuating or safeguarding property. For farmers, the system supports better water management for irrigation, reducing crop loss due to both flooding and water scarcity.
Local governments and disaster response teams also benefit from automated water gate control, enabling faster and more coordinated flood response without relying solely on manual monitoring.
By putting reliable data and decision-making tools in the hands of citizens, Atur Air enhances community resilience, safety, and preparedness, while fostering a culture of collective responsibility in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
