What specific problem are you solving?
Mangrove restoration efforts in Indonesia face numerous challenges, including land availability, conflict with local community interests (95% mangrove area ownership), and ensuring long-term success and sustainable practices. The main causes of mangrove forest depletion is the expansion of shrimp aquaculture. Coastal regions of South Sulawesi have suffered considerable loss as their shrimp production grew to dominate the market over the past 50 years. Mangrove destruction has detrimental environmental consequences, including significant carbon release, biodiversity loss, increased coastal vulnerability, and disruption of ecosystem functions. These effects can lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions, reduced ecosystem services, and increased risks for coastal communities. In the long term, it will create more poverty among coastal people. Total people getting impact for locals is 5000 individuals, and more for natural destruction.
What is your solution?
Integrated Mangrove Shrimp aquaculture is an alternative practice that can meet mangrove conservation needs, while sustaining the livelihoods of coastal communities. The project unfolds in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, targeting the restoration of 66,700 hectares. This will impact 5000 of local families in the coastal area of South Sulawesi. We use integrated data for GIS mapping, dynamic behaviour management, supply chain management, inventory management, and digitized microfinance to develop long term sustainable solutions, circular economy, and inclusive social enterprise. Farmers will gain double revenues from organic shrimp farming and the blue carbon market, while restoring biodiversity and running the inclusive economy with their own community enterprise, the cooperative business model
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The project will increase the livelihood of on average 25,000 local farmers and fishermen of South Sulawesi coastal areas. Farmers will gain double revenues from organic shrimp farming and the blue carbon market, while restoring biodiversity and running the inclusive economy with their own community enterprise, the cooperative business model. The carbon sequestration will have global impact for GHG emissions reduction, the mangrove will protect the coastal people from salt intrusion and abrasion, while the biodiversity will enrich the environment.
