What specific problem are you solving?
Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of childhood blindness, affecting 36 million children globally. This brain-based condition, where children cannot interpret what they see due to neurological damage, impacts up to 1 in 30 children in mainstream classrooms (Williams et al., 2021). Yet, 80% miss crucial early intervention when neuroplasticity could enable significant improvement before their 5th birthday (Merabet et al., 2017). The economic burden is staggering. The WHO Global Report on Vision (2019) estimates that vision impairment costs global productivity $411 billion annually. In developing nations, therapy costs of $6,000 yearly vastly exceed average incomes ($3,400 in India). City-centric therapy centres force parents, predominantly mothers, to sacrifice careers, entrenching gender inequality and reducing household income by 20-30%. Healthcare infrastructure cannot meet demand; the therapist-to-patient ratio in developing regions is approximately 1:100. Therapists spend one-third of their time personalising activities for each child's unique visual needs, severely limiting capacity. Without intervention, these children face educational exclusion and limited employment prospects, converting temporary impairment into lifelong disability. The McKinsey report (2022) estimates that for every diagnosed child, 20 remain undiagnosed, representing vast untapped human potential and economic contribution.
What is your solution?
Vision Nanny is a web platform that makes therapy accessible for children with CVI. We've built a digital library of over 50 interactive activities that work on everyday devices like phones, tablets, and TVs. Our activities help children from 6 months through school age with all levels of CVI severities. Each activity can be customized to match a child's specific visual needs. We've designed it to be simple enough for anyone to use, including parents and community health workers with minimal training. All our content reflects local cultures and environments, making therapy more engaging and relevant to the children. For therapists, Vision Nanny provides assessment tools and progress tracking that save time and improve care, with easy options for customisation. For parents, it offers clear guidance for continuing therapy at home, providing a choice for hybrid therapy. Developed with the guidance of Special educators, our platform has been tested in clinical settings through pilots. The results show children engage 5 times longer and respond 3 times faster compared to traditional therapy methods. Link for demo: https://youtu.be/iA8rlGlZxYs
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Vision Nanny helps three main groups: Children with CVI get therapy that's engaging. Our interactive activities hold their attention longer than traditional methods and make it available even at their homes. This consistent practice during early development makes a real difference; 5 out of 30 children in our studies improved enough to join regular classrooms. Instead of occasional therapy sessions, these children can practice daily in a way that feels like play rather than work. Families save both money and time. At $10 monthly, Vision Nanny costs a fraction of traditional therapy ($6,000 annually). Parents no longer need to travel hours to city clinics, missing work and spending on transportation. Mothers especially benefit, as they're often the ones sacrificing careers to manage therapy schedules. With Vision Nanny, they can provide quality therapy at home while maintaining employment. Therapists and healthcare workers can help more children effectively. Our tools reduce preparation time by 50% (reported by 84% of therapists in our studies). Rural community workers can now deliver specialized therapy previously available only in urban centres. By simplifying assessment and progress tracking, Vision Nanny helps practitioners make data-driven decisions and serve communities that previously had no access to CVI care.
