What specific problem are you solving?
I grew up in a region shaped by war, poverty and displacement. In Liberia, where nearly two decades of civil conflict tore through families and futures, education was one of the deepest casualties. Today, over 20 percent of children aged 6 to 14 are out of school, and only half complete primary education. In Bokay Town, a place of over 25,000 people, no school existed for 14 years. Children walked over an hour each day to reach the nearest classroom, and many never made that journey at all. For refugee children and those who were internally displaced, access to learning simply did not exist. However, the problem runs deeper than distance. Liberia’s education system still depends on rote memorization, leaving students unprepared for life beyond the classroom. Even those who graduate often lack the skills to find work or start a business. I have seen brilliant young people give up, not because they lacked potential, but because the system failed them. At its heart, our solution is about restoring dignity and opportunity. We are making quality learning possible where there was once silence and equipping the next generation with the tools to lead, rebuild and thrive.
What is your solution?
The Central Leadership Academy is the first school established in Bokay Town, Liberia, in 14 years. It offers free, quality education to underprivileged, refugee and internally displaced youth who have been excluded from learning opportunities for decades. Our model is grounded in leadership, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and civic responsibility. We are filling classrooms and equipping students with practical skills to navigate a changing world. We combine community-led teaching with offline digital tools to support personalized learning. Students access interactive educational content through tablets powered by solar energy, making learning possible even in areas without internet or electricity. Our approach bridges global knowledge with local realities. Lessons are designed to build foundational literacy and numeracy while teaching life skills that matter in post-conflict settings, such as problem-solving, leadership, collaboration and resilience. Beyond academics, we work hand-in-hand with families, elders and youth to foster a culture of inclusion and local ownership. This is a school that is restoring hope, dignity and possibility for a generation that has waited too long to be seen.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution directly serves refugee children, internally displaced youth and underprivileged families in Bokay Town, Liberia. These children have grown up without a school in their community. For over 14 years, formal education did not exist in this town. Many children walked for hours each day to reach the nearest school. Others stayed home entirely. Girls faced increased risks of exploitation, and boys often turned to informal labor. Entire families lived with the daily reality of exclusion, poverty and lost opportunity. The Central Leadership Academy meets these children where they are. We bring education into their community and remove the financial, physical and emotional barriers that once stood in their way. Students receive quality learning grounded in leadership, critical thinking and entrepreneurship. We also provide solar-powered tools to ensure consistent access to digital content, even in off-grid areas. Since our launch, we have reached over 6,500 students and lifted an entire community into a space of hope, learning and local empowerment. Our solution is changing individual lives, strengthening families, transforming communities and building the foundation for long-term stability and opportunity.
