What specific problem are you solving?
Indonesia, with a population of over 270 million, has one of the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the world. One of the leading causes is preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication involving high blood pressure and damage to organs such as the kidneys and liver. Globally, preeclampsia causes an estimated 76,000 maternal deaths and 500,000 infant deaths each year. In Indonesia, our data shows that 7 out of 100 pregnant women are affected. However, the national detection rate is only 58%, leaving many undiagnosed cases untreated.
The risk is significantly higher in Indonesia due to significant gaps in maternal healthcare. Pregnant women here face a 36 times greater risk of complications than those in high-income countries. Key contributing factors include limited access to prenatal screening in rural and low-resource areas, low awareness among patients and providers, and unreliable point-of-care diagnostic tools.
Preeclampsia also leads to long-term health issues for both mothers and babies, including organ damage, neurodevelopmental disorders, and increased risk of stunting. These outcomes create lasting health, economic, and social challenges for families and communities.
What is your solution?
SafePrenatal is a digital decision-support tool to improve the early detection of preeclampsia in low-resource settings. Built from over 3,000 pregnancy records in Indonesia, our risk prediction model helps midwives and doctors identify at-risk women as early as the first trimester.
We are currently integrating this model into a mobile-friendly calculator to make it more accessible for frontline health workers. This tech adaptation reduces service time, reduces human error, and enables real-time decision-making. Safe Prenatal is developed and operated by the Indonesian Prenatal Institute and has been deployed across multiple clinics, benefiting over 30,000 pregnant women to date.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We work with Indonesian pregnant women, particularly those in rural and low-resource settings who lack access to early and accurate screening for preeclampsia. These women face significantly higher risks of pregnancy complications due to limited awareness, under-resourced healthcare providers, and the absence of reliable point-of-care tools.
Our solution combines a risk prediction tool built from Indonesian clinical data with low-cost biomarker testing, enabling same-day results during routine antenatal visits. We integrate this tool into existing maternal care pathways and support implementation through training and research. The model has been used to improve detection of preterm preeclampsia by 42.5% and reduce incidence by 38%, aiming to reach more women with timely, affordable, and life-saving care.
