What specific problem are you solving?
One of the biggest difficulties that students face when learning math and science is that they do not receive enough practice and personalized orientation in problem solving. This is so, as very often students get stuck and make mistakes, but due to time and resources constraints teachers are not always able to provide personalized feedback and guidance, leaving many students frustrated and with learning gaps. Students that have the economic means hire private tutors in order to alleviate this problem, however this is a solution that few can take advantage of. Furthermore, this problem is more severe in rural areas and schools located in underserved communities, where there is a chronic shortage of highly skilled teachers. As a result, in these areas and schools there is a higher school dropout rate and lower admission rates to technical programs, which contribute to a growing socioeconomic gap. In Colombia there are around 6 million high school students. Of these approximately 24.4% are located in rural areas. According to the results of the national exams, 71% of students do not reach the basic performance level in math. Worldwide there are around 500 million high school and middle school students, of which around 40% live in rural areas.
What is your solution?
KIB is an interactive web platform that provides students in math and science with the practice and orientation required to master the concepts. For each learning standard, the platform presents students with relevant exercises to solve independently. We developed a tailor made A.I system that offers adaptive support—guiding students through problem-solving steps and providing real-time feedback on mistakes. To further support learning, the platform includes videos, step-by-step explanations, and tailored hints that adjust to each student’s pace and abilities. This approach helps students strengthen their understanding and overcome learning challenges in mathematics and related subjects. KIB also features handwriting recognition for mobile and tablet users. We plan to extend this functionality to E Ink tablets to create a more natural learning experience—ideal for focused, distraction-free study. For teachers, the platform allows them to effortlessly create and automatically grade practice modules, thus relieving them from the chore of manual homework correction. Furthermore, the platform provides dashboards to visualize and monitor student performance, empowering teachers to make timely, data-driven decisions and create learning strategies that adapt to their students' needs. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves students at the middle and high school levels and their teachers. It will particularly have a great impact on students from rural areas and schools located on underserved communities where there is limited access to highly skilled teachers and educational resources. This is so, as the platform will contribute to provide the personalized orientation and practice necessary to master the subjects that very often teachers can't provide because of a lack of time and resources. This will impact positively the students' inclusion, confidence on their abilities and engagement with the subjects. This in turn will help decrease dropout rates due to low school performance and increase acceptance rate among these students to technical and engineering university programs which has the potential for a highly economical impact in the communities.
