What specific problem are you solving?
I came from a country where there is only 1 microscope for hundreds of students. Globally, millions of students in underserved areas. According to UNESCO, 1 billion students live in low- and middle-income countries, 90% of those are primary schools without access to adequate science lab facilities.
This is directly proportional to poor performance and interest in STEM career. Example is in the Philippines ranking lowest in science among 79 countries.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the Make-roscope, a low cost, very small, reusable and easy to use microscope for phones and tablet. It is an attachment that is placed on top of the selfie cam of smartphones, turning it into a microscope. It is a patented innovation that serves over 10,000 students in the Philippines. It can view specimen from 125x magnification up to 400x using software zoom. It can view dry and wet samples such as pond water to see microbial life. We package this in a small tin can complete with prepared specimen, blank slides, and accessories to maximize exploration.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We designed this for students aged 10 to 24, particularly in densely populated and education-driven areas of the Philippines where science tools are hard to come by, but smartphones are everywhere. This includes major cities like Metro Manila and surrounding provinces, which have the highest number of schools and students focused on science.
Our main customers are junior and senior high school students, teachers, and NGOs looking for budget friendly, hands-on learning resources.
The innovation has traction among young, tech-savvy individuals who are active on social media platforms like TikTok.
We also reach out to rural and underserved communities by providing portable microscopes to schools that lack proper lab equipment.
We collaborate with NGOs, foundations, and government agencies to connect with remote areas.
Beyond the Philippines, we are also branching out into international markets like the South-East Asia nations, and Africa through educational distributors.
