What specific problem are you solving?
In Nepal and across much of the Global South, smallholder farmers face fragmented and informal markets that limit income and create trade insecurity. Despite agriculture contributing to 25% of Nepal’s GDP and employing over 60% of the workforce, farmers lack access to trustworthy buyers, fair pricing, and reliable payment systems. Informal trades are frequently verbal and unenforceable, and price opacity leaves farmers earning 25 - 30% below potential. When agricultural trade fails, it fuels poverty and migration. While many high-income countries have institutionalized commodity exchanges or state-guaranteed trade systems, countries like Nepal lack such support. Here, the absence of formal, trusted trade infrastructure reinforces inequality and limits economic mobility. There is a critical need for context-specific, digital infrastructure that connects producers and buyers, enforces trust, and helps rural economies grow from the ground up. Similar dynamics exist in Kenya, Nigeria, and other emerging economies, where rural producers remain excluded from structured commodity markets or lack trust in public alternatives.
What is your solution?
AgriBaato is a digital platform that makes agricultural trade in Nepal faster, safer, and more reliable. It connects sellers and buyers through a mobile app, helping them find each other, compare prices, negotiate, and complete secure transactions. Through the app, sellers can list their crops, and buyers can place bids or make instant purchases. The platform includes real-time price comparisons from local and cross-border markets, so users can make informed decisions. To ensure trust, AgriBaato offers features like verified seller profiles, escrow-backed payments (where money is held securely until the crop is delivered), and third-party quality checks. Local agents support adoption by helping users onboard and facilitating deals, earning commission for each successful trade — creating new economic opportunities in rural communities. AgriBaato transforms informal, high-risk trade into transparent, data-driven commerce — making agriculture a more dependable source of income for millions.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
AgriBaato serves farmers, cooperative, agri-traders, and manufacturers as well as any stakeholder involved in the agricultural value chain in Nepal — populations that form the backbone of the country’s food systems but remain underserved by formal market infrastructure. Agricultural trade is reliant on informal, verbal trading systems that leave them vulnerable to price exploitation, delayed payments, and trade failures. Buyers — such as food processors and wholesalers — face difficulties sourcing consistent, quality produce. They often depend on fragmented supply chains and lack tools to verify sellers or source. AgriBaato addresses these gaps by providing a digital platform where farmers and buyers can connect directly, negotiate securely, and trade with confidence. Features like real-time price comparison, verified profiles, and escrow-backed payments empower farmers to earn more while reducing risk for buyers. The solution also creates new income streams for rural agents who facilitate trade and onboard users. By digitizing trust and transparency, AgriBaato increases economic opportunity and protects livelihoods.
