What specific problem are you solving?
According to WHO we lose 6500 newborns and over 700 mothers every day due to neonatal and maternal deaths. These deaths could mostly be prevented with accurate and timely care. NeMa as a part of the Safe Delivery application, helps midwives in rural areas receive quickly and intuitively up-to-date information about pregnancy, labor, contraception, and postnatal care, including postpartum hemorrhage, infections, pre-eclampsia, caring for a low-birth-weight newborn, and much more. The solution aims to enhance and maintain the skills of professional midwives, offers verified information in unusual or surprising situations, and scales the updated information quickly to remote areas. Enhancing the care in rural areas is essential since the maternal mortality ratio is 34,6 times higher in low-income countries than in high-income countries, which translates to it being 120 times more likely for a woman to die in childbirth during their lifetime in low-income countries than it is in high-income countries.
What is your solution?
Explicitly crafted to address maternal and neonatal mortality, NeMa is a non-generative conversational AI that allows midwives to access reliable information about pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care by asking questions and receiving pre-written responses. The midwives can ask questions about screening and management of common complications, remind themselves of vital emergency procedures and guidelines, and quickly check the doses and indications for typical medications used in maternal and neonatal care. NeMa is connected to Maternity Foundation’s Safe Delivery App and uses the clinically verified information found in the app for its responses. Use of pre-written responses ensures that there’s full control over the shared information. NeMa collects anonymous data about its usage and visualises the analyzed data in real time to allow beneficiaries to get relevant and up-to-date insights into the field: what issues midwives are facing, are there lacks in resources, are there any new emerging trends. Once loaded, NeMa works both online and offline and is thus the first ever conversational AI to work outside a network.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
NeMa helps to reinforce and maintain the professional skills and knowledge of trained midwives who are working in remote, low-resource areas. Midwives working in remote areas don't usually have colleagues to refer to when they encounter rare or surprising medical situations. By using NeMa via the Safe Delivery Application they can quickly check the latest guidelines and instructions, considering the situation, whether it's about recognizing a pregnancy related complication, dosage of a medication or recognizing the second best ways to proceed if for example the most suitable or commonly used equipment or medication is not available. NeMa does not provide case-specific instructions but utilizes the WHO guidelines and content written by clinical professionals. Final decisions are always made by the trained midwives themselves. By granting access to the most reliable information, NeMa supports in recognizing and managing complications, handling surprising and uncommon situations, and ultimately in saving the lives of women and children.
