What specific problem are you solving?
The problem we are working to solve is the severe lack of accessible, affordable, and timely healthcare services in Zambia. Zambia has a doctor-to-patient ratio of about 1 doctor per 10,000 people in rural areas, compared to the WHO-recommended ratio of 1:1,000. This shortage is critical, especially considering that around 60% of Zambia’s population lives in rural areas, while only about 30% of health facilities are located there. As a result, millions of people face long travel distances and delayed or missed treatment.
Furthermore, In rural Zambia, transport costs to reach a clinic can be as high as US$10—an unmanageable expense in a country where most families survive on less than US$1 a day. This financial burden is worsened by high out-of-pocket payments for consultations and medications, leading many to forgo care altogether.
Public healthcare facilities are overwhelmed, with long waiting times and understaffed clinics. Chronic diseases, including hypertension (affecting roughly 25% of adults), diabetes, HIV, and tuberculosis, are common but often go undiagnosed due to the lack of regular screenings.
Our solution addresses key contributing factors: poor access, high costs, and low availability of continuous health care in remote and low-resource areas in Zambia.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Teledoctor Zambia serves an underserved population of approximately 5 million Zambians who face challenges in accessing timely and affordable healthcare services. The target population includes individuals in both urban and semi-urban, as well as rural areas who often encounter barriers such as long travel distances to healthcare facilities, limited availability of medical professionals, and high consultation costs. This approach minimizes travel costs, reduces waiting times, and ensures consistent access to expert medical advice. Through user-friendly technology, the platform empowers individuals to manage their health more effectively, enhancing their quality of life.
