What specific problem are you solving?
Dyslexia, a common yet often invisible learning disability, affects an estimated 5–17% of the global population — including hundreds of thousands of children across Canada. Despite its prevalence, many dyslexic students remain undiagnosed for years, silently struggling in classrooms built for readers. Most schools still rely heavily on text-based instruction, standardized tests, and silent reading — environments that can feel hostile and alienating for students with dyslexia. These children are not less capable — but when the system speaks a language they can't easily decode, they are left behind. They fall through the cracks, misunderstood as lazy, inattentive, or disinterested, when in reality, they are fighting to learn in a format that doesn’t fit how their brain processes information. Without early intervention and tailored support, dyslexic students often face chronic academic failure, anxiety, and low self-worth. In Canada, many provinces still lack mandatory screening and structured literacy programs, compounding the problem. The result is a quiet crisis: bright, curious children losing confidence, disengaging from learning, and missing out on their full potential simply because the tools around them weren’t built for their minds.
What is your solution?
Charm Bears are soft, AI-powered teddy bears that help children with dyslexia learn through voice-based, multisensory conversation. They talk, listen, and respond—turning learning into an engaging experience that feels more like a friend than a lesson. When a child speaks to a Charm Bear, it uses speech-to-text (STT) to understand their words. That input is processed by a custom fine-tined large language model (LLM) to generate thoughtful, age-appropriate responses. Then, it replies using text-to-speech (TTS) in an expressive, comforting voice. Charm Bears can tutor kids in academics, read aloud stories, play phonics games, answer complex questions, and even guide children through exercises that strengthen vocabulary and comprehension. Because they're screen-free and physically interactive, children can hug it, talk to it, and learn with it—all without the pressure or overstimulation that often comes with tablets or books. Charm Bears are emotionally intelligent, and designed to support the way dyslexic children naturally learn—through connection, repetition, and multi-sensory interaction. They make learning more accessible, less stressful, and a lot more fun. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Charm Bears are designed to serve young children with dyslexia—a common, lifelong learning difference that affects the ability to read, write, and process language. These children are bright, curious, and capable, but they often feel excluded from traditional classrooms built around silent reading, written tests, and rigid literacy timelines. Many go undiagnosed for years, mislabelled as inattentive or lazy, when the real issue is a mismatch between how they learn and how they’re taught. Dyslexic learners are underserved because most education systems rely on text-heavy, one-size-fits-all instruction and lack accessible tools that offer alternative ways to engage with language and learning. In Canada and globally, this leads to academic struggles, low self-esteem, and emotional withdrawal from learning environments. Charm Bears provide an inclusive, voice-based learning companion that helps dyslexic children engage with language in a way that feels natural, supportive, and safe. Through conversation, storytelling, and emotional connection, they create positive associations with learning while boosting verbal confidence and vocabulary awareness
