Our solution, MagClean, is a non-invasive, wearable medical device that uses low-intensity magnetic induction to generate electric microcurrents over orthopedic implants. These microcurrents safely disrupt bacterial biofilms, which are responsible for implant-related infections. The device consists of a lightweight, rechargeable coil system designed to fit over the affected limb like a brace. Once activated, it emits a controlled magnetic field...

What specific problem are you solving?
We are solving the problem of orthopedic implant-associated infections, a serious and often untreatable complication affecting millions globally. These infections occur when bacteria form biofilms on metal implants, rendering antibiotics and immune defenses ineffective. The only current solution is invasive and costly surgical removal of the implant, which is not viable for many patients due to comorbidities, high risk, or limited healthcare access. In the United States alone, there are approximately 13 million biofilm-related infections annually, causing 500,000 deaths and costing the healthcare system $3.9 billion. Globally, orthopedic infections contribute significantly to post-surgical morbidity, especially in aging populations and in trauma cases. Traditional prevention methods like antibiotic coatings or systemic drugs have failed to provide reliable, scalable protection. Our solution addresses these challenges by offering a portable, non-invasive device that uses magnetically induced electric microcurrents to disrupt biofilms, either preventing infection in high-risk patients or treating ongoing infections without surgery. This reduces healthcare costs, improves recovery outcomes, and makes infection management accessible beyond hospital settings.
What is your solution?
Our solution, MagClean, is a non-invasive, wearable medical device that uses low-intensity magnetic induction to generate electric microcurrents over orthopedic implants. These microcurrents safely disrupt bacterial biofilms, which are responsible for implant-related infections. The device consists of a lightweight, rechargeable coil system designed to fit over the affected limb like a brace. Once activated, it emits a controlled magnetic field that induces microcurrents directly in the metal implant without the need for surgery or direct contact. This electricidal effect has been proven in preclinical studies to reduce bacterial load by up to 82% in just two weeks. MagClean can be used at home or in clinical settings, either as a preventive tool for high-risk patients (e.g., those with trauma or cancer) or as a non-surgical treatment for existing infections. The technology is safe, portable, and cost-effective—offering a breakthrough alternative to antibiotics and revision surgeries. Our goal is to transform infection management in orthopedics and improve quality of life for millions. Product demo available at: www.paccatech.com
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
MagClean serves patients with orthopedic implants who are at risk of infection or already suffering from implant-associated infections. This includes elderly individuals, trauma victims, cancer patients, and people with diabetes or compromised immune systems—groups often underserved by current treatments due to surgical risks, limited mobility, or poor access to specialized care. These patients face prolonged hospital stays, reduced quality of life, and sometimes even amputations or death due to untreatable infections. Our solution provides a safe, non-invasive, and accessible alternative to the current standard of care, which often involves risky revision surgeries and prolonged antibiotic use. By enabling infection prevention and treatment at home or in outpatient settings, MagClean reduces hospital dependence, lowers healthcare costs, and empowers patients to manage their recovery with dignity and autonomy. This is especially impactful in low-resource settings or regions with limited surgical infrastructure. For many, MagClean could mean fewer surgeries, faster healing, and a return to daily life without pain, fear, or immobility.
