What specific problem are you solving?
In rural Tanzania, access to clean drinking water remains a critical challenge. Around 18.4 million people about 28% of the population still rely on unsafe water sources. This leads to widespread waterborne illnesses, with diarrhea being a leading cause of death among children under five. In fact, these preventable diseases contribute significantly to the country’s under-five mortality rate, which remains alarmingly high at around 10%.
This issue reflects a much broader crisis across Africa, where one in three people face water scarcity and over 400 million lack access to basic drinking water services. Globally, nearly 2 billion people are forced to use water contaminated with fecal matter, resulting in close to one million deaths each year from diarrheal diseases alone. Climate change is only making things worse deteriorating water sources for nearly 30% of rural Tanzanian households and putting even more pressure on already limited resources.
SafeSip is our direct response to this urgent situation. We offer an affordable, easy-to-use water purification solution that households can use right at the point of consumption. By reducing exposure to contaminated water, SafeSip helps prevent disease and strengthens community resilience against the growing challenges of water insecurity and climate change.
What is your solution?
SafeSip is a portable, personal water filtration straw designed for immediate purification of contaminated water sources. It enables users, particularly in resource-limited settings like rural Tanzania, to drink safely directly from rivers, lakes, or ponds.
The straw utilizes a robust filtration process. First, a particulate pre-filter removes larger sediments. Second, a 0.2-micron hollow-fiber micro-filtration membrane physically blocks 99.99% of bacteria, parasites, and microplastics, meeting WHO standards. Finally, an activated carbon filter reduces chlorine and improves taste, incorporating our patented antibacterial beads which actively kill bacteria and inhibit microbial growth within the filter itself, ensuring prolonged safety and effectiveness.
Engineered for practicality, each SafeSip straw is durable, filters up to 1,500 liters (providing safe water for one person for up to 5 years), requires no electricity or batteries, and is simple to use. Its target price is $5 USD. Furthermore, the straw casing is manufactured using recycled plastic, contributing to a circular economy. SafeSip delivers immediate access to safe drinking water through proven and enhanced filtration technology in a user-friendly format.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
SafeSip serves vulnerable populations across East Africa, particularly rural communities, children under five, and their families in countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, where access to safe drinking water remains critically low. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, 400 million people lack basic drinking water services (UNICEF/WHO), forcing millions in these regions to rely on contaminated sources like rivers and ponds. This population is severely underserved, facing high rates of preventable waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which contribute significantly to child mortality rates. Furthermore, the daily, hours-long burden of fetching water, primarily undertaken by women and girls, significantly hinders educational attainment and economic opportunity for entire communities.
SafeSip directly addresses these fundamental needs by providing an immediate, affordable ($5 target), and reliable means to purify water directly at the point of consumption. This directly impacts lives by drastically reducing exposure to harmful pathogens, thereby lowering disease rates and healthcare costs, especially among vulnerable children. It saves invaluable time and energy by eliminating arduous water collection journeys and the need for fuel-intensive boiling, freeing up individuals for education or income-generating activities.
