What specific problem are you solving?
Just 7% of refugees reach tertiary-level education, whilst the global average enrolment rate for young people is 42%. An estimated 8m young refugees are missing out on tertiary education compared to their peers who have not been displaced. Refugees face many barriers: minimal finances, low secondary school completion, and mental health, and a lack of information on opportunities, Research by UNHCR found that a lack of information and guidance leaves refugees unaware of how to access opportunities. The pathways are often highly complex, including host country education systems, overseas scholarships, online learning, and training from aid agencies. It also affects secondary school completion: an evaluation of UN scholarships found awareness of opportunities to be a key motivator in completing secondary school. A UNESCO study also found students have little incentive to stay in school if there is no opportunity to progress through primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
What is your solution?
The Guidance Programme supports refugee youth in secondary school to access tertiary-level opportunities through seven modules of digital content, peer-led workshops, and mentorship. Students progress through a transformative exploration of interests and strengths, enabling them to identify suitable opportunities. They learn how to research and evaluate opportunities and scholarships. They develop skills for interviews, craft compelling CVs, motivation letters, and application essays. By the end of the programme, students have enhanced knowledge and skills for access; they have a set of key documents and a plan for pursuing opportunities; and they have enhanced confidence and improved mental wellbeing. The Programme can be delivered in three ways: at a local learning centre with IT facilities; online remote workshops; or via WhatsApp with an AI-driven learning system. It is facilitated by young refugees, including Mosaik alumni, who receive training, lead recruitment, and inform design.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our programme will directly serve refugee youth, primarily aged between 15 and 24. Female participation has also been consistently higher than men in the Guidance Programme - an average 60% of participants are female. The Guidance Programme is open to all nationalities and backgrounds., but the majority of participants so far have been Syrian refugees. Since 2019 we have reached 5900 students in the Middle East and Africa. The Guidance Programme supports refugee youth to navigate and access tertiary-level education and training. Students gain essential skills and knowledge for learning continuity after secondary school. They report enhanced confidence and improved mental wellbeing. The programme is delivered through digital materials, peer-led workshops, and mentorship.
