What specific problem are you solving?
Youths in Malawi face significant mental health challenges due to poverty, trauma, and lack of access to care especially mentalhealth care. According to WHO, mental health issues affect 10–20% of adolescents globally, yet in Malawi, fewer than 1% have access to mental health services. Cultural stigma, inadequate resources, and a shortage of trained mental health professionals worsen the problem. In rural areas, the situation is more complex, with limited outreach and support systems. This neglect leads to long-term consequences including school dropouts, substance abuse, and we have high suicidal cases. Our solution addresses these gaps by focusing on youth-friendly, accessible, and culturally sensitive mental health services.
What is your solution?
MindConnect Malawi is a hybrid model offering community-based mental health support for youth aged 15–25. It combines trained peer counselors, mobile outreach clinics, and a digital platform that provides psychoeducation, self-help tools, and confidential chat with trained professionals. The solution leverages local community structures like schools, youth clubs, and health centers to deliver services, supported by a mobile app and SMS-based system for low-tech access. It uses AI-assisted screening tools and referrals, ensuring early intervention because a person can have stress and if he or she screened herself might help and look for necessary support and sustained support. MindConnect empowers youth as both beneficiaries and agents of change in mental wellness.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our primary target is Malawian youth aged 15–25, especially those in underserved rural and peri-urban areas. These young people often lack access to accurate mental health information, services, or safe spaces to talk. Many face stigma in the communities, isolation, and poor mental health outcomes. By providing youth-friendly, culturally relevant support through trusted channelslike peer educators, mobile units, and a digital platform, radios we can empower youth with knowledge, reduce stigma, and create access to care. This boosts self-esteem, school retention, and resilience, and helps break the cycle of untreated mental illness in their communities and people to live a good life and wellbeing which is goal number 3 of sustainable goal development.
