What specific problem are you solving?
The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting sectors, responsible for up to 10% of global carbon emissions, 35% of ocean microplastic pollution, and excessive water and energy use. Synthetic and blended fibers like polyester dominate the market, accounting for over 60% of global textile production. These materials are not only fossil-based but also non-biodegradable and hard to recycle, creating long-term environmental harm. At the same time, fashion supply chains often exclude or exploit vulnerable communities, especially in the Global South, where labor is cheap and environmental regulations are weak. Phycolabs addresses these systemic challenges by developing sustainable threads and textile fibers made from tropical seaweed cultivated in Brazil. We target carbon-intensive materials, microplastic pollution, and social inequity by replacing extractive models with regenerative ones. Our solution creates economic opportunity for coastal communities while improving ocean health. Over 3 billion people depend on the ocean and coastal ecosystems for their livelihoods. If fashion continues on its current path, ocean degradation and climate impact will accelerate. We believe material innovation rooted in marine biotechnology and inclusive economic models is essential for solving both the climate crisis and the inequities embedded in global production systems.
What is your solution?
Phycolabs creates scalable, sustainable textile fibers from cultivated seaweed — a regenerative, ocean-based solution for the fashion industry’s climate and pollution challenges. Our yarns are made from tropical seaweeds grown in Brazil, requiring no freshwater, arable land, or synthetic inputs. The result is a biobased, microplastic-free, and zero-petrochemical material that replaces carbon-intensive fibers like polyester and reduces environmental impact across the textile supply chain. By using one of the planet's most efficient carbon-absorbing organisms—seaweed—we combine climate action, ocean protection, and inclusive development in a single, scalable material. What makes our solution different is that it is designed for circularity and transparency from the start. We do not blend our fibers with cotton, polyester, or lyocell, which makes them easier to recycle. Our material is fully traceable — from the seaweed farm to the final bobine — allowing brands and consumers to track environmental and social impact. Our material works on existing textile machinery, making it scalable and cost-effective for industry adoption. Beyond environmental benefits, we want to empower traditional coastal communities in Brazil by integrating them into a regenerative blue economy. We aim to unite in harmony economic development, communities, nature, industry, and science.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Primarily, we want to serve traditional coastal communities in Brazil, many of whom rely on fishing or informal work and face increasing vulnerability due to ocean degradation, economic instability, and climate change. These communities are often excluded from global innovation cycles, especially in high-value sectors like biotechnology and sustainable fashion. Our solution integrates these communities into a regenerative blue economy by creating new income opportunities through seaweed cultivation and decentralized bioprocessing. We want to offer fair compensation and long-term partnerships, prioritizing environmental stewardship and community resilience. By anchoring biomaterials production in the Global South, we aim to shift economic power and visibility toward populations historically left out of the fashion supply chain, without reproducing extractive models. At the same time, we serve fashion brands and conscious consumers seeking low-impact, transparent, and traceable materials. Our traceability model gives consumers access to the stories behind their clothes, reshaping narratives around value and origin. Our vision is grounded in a Theory of Change: we believe that a new material, created from the ocean and with communities, can unlock a cascade of transformation — from fiber to fashion — toward a just, transparent, and regenerative industry.
