What specific problem are you solving?
Across the globe, over 250 million children lack access to formal learning, and many who are enrolled are not developing the foundational skills they need to thrive. One of the most urgent and overlooked barriers to learning is emotional distress—a global challenge with deep local implications. According to the World Health Organization, mental health conditions account for 16% of the global disease burden among adolescents, yet 75% of youth worldwide don’t receive the care they need.
In the United States, 1 in 3 high school students reports poor mental health, and nearly 1 in 5 has seriously considered suicide. These numbers are even more severe among Latino, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC youth, who often lack access to culturally relevant support. The average student-to-counselor ratio is 408:1, far above the recommended 250:1.
In Latin America, emotional distress contributes significantly to early dropout and chronic absenteeism, yet most public schools lack even one school psychologist. Socio-emotional learning (SEL) is rarely integrated into the school day. As a result, a growing number of students—especially those in low-resource and bilingual communities—are left without the emotional tools needed to succeed in school or in life.
What is your solution?
MUUD is a bilingual, AI-powered mobile app that supports the emotional well-being of K–12 students while providing educators with real-time emotional insights. Students engage in daily emotional check-ins, respond to interactive journaling prompts, and receive personalized support from MUUDY, an AI companion trained to offer culturally sensitive, age-appropriate guidance in both English and Spanish.
Students can privately reflect on how they feel and receive adaptive feedback—even in low-connectivity environments. Meanwhile, educators access a dashboard with anonymized class-level emotional data, helping them identify patterns, stress triggers, and opportunities for early intervention. MUUD leverages natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to interpret student inputs and generate tailored support for both students and teachers.
Unlike static SEL curricula, MUUD provides a dynamic, trauma-informed experience that integrates seamlessly into the school day. Its mobile-first, low-cost design makes it highly accessible for under-resourced schools and underserved communities in both the U.S. and Latin America.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
MUUD serves students aged 13–18, with a focus on those in under-resourced schools, bilingual (ELL) communities, and populations historically underserved in education—particularly Latino, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ youth in the U.S. and Latin America. These students often experience emotional distress, social isolation, and limited access to mental health support, yet schools are rarely equipped with the tools or staff to address their needs.
Many rely on overburdened teachers and school counselors—if they exist at all—while navigating systemic barriers such as language exclusion, stigma around mental health, and digital inequity. MUUD addresses these challenges by offering a private, culturally responsive space for students to express and regulate their emotions through AI-guided check-ins, journaling, and personalized support via MUUDY, our emotional AI companion.
Simultaneously, educators gain access to real-time, anonymized emotional data that helps them understand class dynamics and support students more proactively. MUUD creates a bridge between student well-being and educator awareness, helping schools become more emotionally inclusive. By centering student voices, reducing stigma, and increasing access to emotional support, MUUD helps young people feel seen, safe, and ready to learn—no matter where they are.
