What specific problem are you solving?
A major challenge OneHealth+ addresses is the lack of affordable and accessible healthcare financing for people working in the informal sector, who make up over 65% of Ghana’s workforce and face significant barriers to care. These individuals often earn irregular incomes and cannot afford traditional insurance premiums, forcing them to rely on out-of-pocket payments. As a result, many delay or forgo care, leading to worsening health conditions and preventable complications.
Globally, more than 1 billion people in Africa lack health insurance, with coverage in some countries as low as 2%. In Ghana alone, 83% of the workforce operates in the informal economy, representing 35.8% (USD $84 billion) of Ghana’s GDP. Without affordable options, most turn to out-of-pocket payments, which increase financial strain and worsen health inequities—especially for low-income and rural populations.
Additionally, healthcare remittances from the diaspora, which account for an estimated 20–30% of Ghana’s $4.6 billion in remittance inflows, lack transparency. Families abroad send funds for medical care, but cannot verify how the money is spent. OneHealth+ addresses these issues by offering a secure, flexible health credit system, ensuring healthcare funds are saved, managed, and used efficiently—improving access, accountability, and equity in health financing.
What is your solution?
OneHealth+ is a digital platform that helps individuals and families especially those in the informal sector plan, pay for, and access healthcare without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses at the time of illness. It allows users to fund a secure wallet and receive health credits, which can be used to pay for services at a trusted network of hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, labs, and wellness centers like gyms and spas.
For loved ones living abroad, OneHealth+ provides a reliable way to support healthcare needs back home. Diaspora users can purchase health credits and allocate them directly to a beneficiary, ensuring the funds are used exclusively for medical care. Every transaction is recorded using blockchain technology, which adds transparency and builds trust for both senders and receivers. Employers can also use the platform to support the health of their workers by contributing health credits as a flexible alternative to traditional insurance.
The platform is accessible via web and mobile-friendly applications, making it simple to use even for those with limited digital experience. In short, OneHealth+ helps people save, send, and use healthcare funds in a way that is flexible, transparent, and designed to fit their everyday needs.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The primary target population for OneHealth+ includes informal sector workers, low-income families, and individuals in rural and underserved communities across Ghana who lack access to affordable, reliable healthcare financing. Over 65% of Ghana’s workforce operates in the informal sector, where inconsistent income makes it difficult to afford traditional health insurance or pay for care when needed. These individuals are often forced to delay or forgo treatment due to cost, leading to worsened health outcomes, preventable complications, and financial hardship.
Many also lack access to financial tools that allow them to plan for health expenses in advance. Additionally, families receiving remittances from loved ones abroad often struggle with transparency, as funds intended for medical use may be diverted to other pressing needs.
OneHealth+ addresses these issues through an innovative, tech-enabled platform that allows users to save, manage, and spend health-dedicated funds via mobile money and blockchain technology. It empowers individuals to plan for care, enables diaspora contributions to be tracked and used only for health services, and supports businesses in providing flexible health benefits. Ultimately, the platform promotes health equity by removing financial barriers to care.
